Coolant flush for Old Northwest Reno drivers: Mae Anne Avenue, 11 minutes

Old Northwest Reno and the Rancho San Rafael area are about 11 minutes and 4.1 miles from our Mae Anne Avenue service center by OSRM routing, and a coolant flush there is a drive-in service. We test the coolant's freeze point and condition, show you the reading, and replace it with the manufacturer's type only when it is worn or past the interval in your manual.

City driving is hard on coolant in a way highway driving is not. In the 89503 neighborhoods around Rancho San Rafael Park, trips are short, stops are frequent and a car spends a summer afternoon creeping between lights on Keystone Avenue and McCarran with the engine heat soaking into everything under the hood. The ZIP holds about 30,249 people, averages 1.67 vehicles per household and a 20.0 minute commute (Census ACS 5-year 2024). Fewer cars per home means each one does more of the work.

Which coolant, and how long it lasts

Three families cover nearly every car on the road, according to AAA. IAT is the older green coolant with an interval of about two years or 24,000 miles. OAT, typical of GM vehicles, lasts about five years or 50,000 miles. HOAT, typical of Ford and Chrysler vehicles, also runs about five years or 50,000, and some automakers stretch their spec to ten years or 150,000 miles. AAA's warning is that OAT is not compatible with the others and that color is a poor guide. Our rule is the same as theirs: the owner's manual decides.

Stop-and-go heat in the old neighborhoods

At highway speed, air rushes through the radiator. At a red light it does not, and the fan has to do the job alone. The Reno-Tahoe airport station averages about 24 days at 90 F or hotter in July and 22 in August (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). That is when weak coolant or a cap that no longer holds pressure lets the temperature needle drift up in traffic. Fresh coolant at the correct mix raises the boiling point and keeps the inhibitors protecting the water pump and radiator from the inside.

Winter brings its own load: about 122 nights a year at or below freezing at the same station. A car parked on the street in Old Northwest Reno needs its coolant to stay liquid all night.

McCarran west to Mae Anne

From the Rancho San Rafael side, follow McCarran Boulevard west and turn onto Mae Anne Avenue; the service center is at 6100 Mae Anne Ave. OSRM free-flow routing calls it about 11 minutes from the middle of 89503. Hours are Monday through Friday 8 to 5 and Saturday 8 to 4, closed Sunday, and the phone is (775) 787-1000.

In the bay

Pull up to the open bay and the technician meets you. The coolant gets a refractometer reading for freeze point and a visual check for rust, oil or sludge, and the radiator cap, hoses and reservoir get a look. If the flush makes sense, you get a written quote first, which Nevada law (NRS 487.6875) requires for work over fifty dollars. With your yes, the old coolant is drained from the radiator and from the block where the engine allows, the system is refilled with the specified coolant and bled of air, and the heater and gauge are checked. The old fluid is collected for recycling.

If the inspection points to a leak, a cracked tank or a water pump problem, we tell you and point you to a repair shop. We do not do those repairs.

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

How long does the visit take?

It depends on the vehicle and on how busy the bay is. Ask the technician when you pull in and you will get an honest answer.

Can I just top it off instead?

If the coolant tests healthy and is only a little low, a top-off with the matching type is fine. We will tell you which one it is.

Where can I read more about overheating in traffic?

The overheating guide covers what to do when the needle climbs.
