Audi Q7 Oil Change: A Big Quattro With a Specific Oil

Audi recommends a maintenance service on the Q7 every 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever occurs first. The 2017 and newer Q7 comes with a 2.0 TFSI four or a 3.0 TFSI V6, and each lists its own VW approval on the engine-bay sticker, with later 3.0 TFSI engines moving to VW 508 00 and earlier ones listing VW 502 00 or 504 00, so we read yours before pouring.

The Q7 is Audi's three-row SUV, the one that carries a soccer team to Sparks on Saturday and a family to Lake Tahoe on Sunday. It is heavy, it is always quattro, and in its second generation it came with two very different engines. That makes the Q7 a car where the engine bay label matters more than the model year. Here is what Audi publishes and how we take care of one.

Two engines, read the label

The second-generation Q7 arrived for 2017. The 45 TFSI (earlier badged 2.0T) uses the 2.0-liter four, and the 55 TFSI (earlier 3.0T) uses the 3.0-liter turbo V6, a mild hybrid from 2020. A third-party oil reference, Pure Tyre's Q7 data page, lists VW 502 00 or 504 00 for the 2.0 TFSI and for earlier 3.0 TFSI cars, and VW 508 00 for later 3.0 TFSI cars. That shift is why we never choose by year alone.

The first-generation Q7 (2007 to 2015) had a 3.6 VR6, a supercharged 3.0 TFSI and a TDI diesel. Each lists its own approval in the manual. We stock the common VW approvals; if your Q7's label calls for one we do not have that day, we tell you before we start.

The Audi schedule

Audi of America's Audi Care brochure recommends a maintenance service every 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. The Q7's indicator follows that, and the oil and filter are part of each service.

A Q7 that tows has a tougher job than the indicator knows. Owner's manuals generally treat towing and mountain grades as harder service, and US-50 from Carson City over Spooner Summit is a long, steady climb. We look harder at coolant and at the transmission for seepage on any Q7 with a hitch.

quattro on a Q7

Unlike the A4 and Q5 with quattro ultra, the Q7 uses a full-time quattro system with a center differential and an eight-speed tiptronic automatic. The front and rear differentials hold gear oil, and Audi's booklet lists when, if ever, each is serviced. We follow the booklet; our differential service page explains how.

The eight-speed tiptronic is a torque-converter automatic, not a dual-clutch, and Audi treats much of its fluid as long-life. We check for leaks and tell you what the booklet says for your mileage.

Altitude, winter and the third row

At Reno's 4,500 feet, a turbo Q7 works harder to make its power, and a summer climb with seven people aboard adds heat to the oil and coolant. In winter, Reno averages 122 nights a year at or below freezing (NOAA 1991-2020 normals), and a heavy SUV with a big battery load from heated seats in three rows is worth a fall battery test at participating locations. The three-row cabin also runs a lot of air through its cabin filter, which we check every visit.

Our Q7 visit

  1. Drive in, no appointment, at any of the four service centers; the bays take full-size SUVs.
  2. Confirm the approval on the label, drain, new filter, refill to capacity and check the level in the MMI.
  3. Maintenance check: filters, coolant, brake fluid, battery, tires, lights, wipers and a look at the differentials.
  4. Reset the service indicator and tell you what we saw.
