Chevy Equinox Oil Change: The 1.5 Turbo and Its Numbers

Current Equinox models run GM's 1.5L turbo four on dexos1 0W-20 full synthetic, and GM's 2026 capacity chart lists 4.2 quarts for front-wheel drive and 5.3 quarts for all-wheel drive. The Oil Life System sets the interval, with a change due within 600 miles of the reminder and at least once a year.

The Equinox is the compact Chevy that shows up most in our Carson City service center: commuters on I-580, families in Dayton, plenty of AWD versions bought for the winter. It looks like a simple oil change, and mostly it is. Two details make it worth reading about first: the small turbo is picky about oil spec, and the AWD and front-drive versions hold different amounts.

At a glance

  • 1.5L turbo four: dexos1 0W-20 (GM TechLink 2026)
  • FWD holds 4.2 quarts, AWD holds 5.3 quarts with the filter
  • GM's 2017 bulletin requires dexos1 full synthetic in its small turbo engines
  • Oil Life System timing, at least one change a year
  • Cabin filter inspection every 22,500 miles or two years, sooner in smoke

Why the drivetrain changes the fill

It surprises people, but the AWD Equinox holds more oil. GM's 2026 engine oil capacity chart lists the 1.5L (LSD) at 4.0 liters, about 4.2 quarts, in front-wheel-drive versions and 5.0 liters, about 5.3 quarts, with all-wheel drive. Both take dexos1 0W-20. We look up the version before we fill, because a one-quart difference is enough to overfill a FWD model or leave an AWD model low.

Earlier generations used other engines, including a 2.0L turbo in some 2018 to 2020 models and a 2.4L and 3.6L before that. The cap and the owner's manual settle the grade on those, and we follow them.

Small turbo, strict spec

In May 2017 GM sent dealers a bulletin, 16-NA-367, about its small turbo engines, including the 1.5L used in the 2018 Equinox. It said these engines require 0W-20 or 5W-30 dexos1 full synthetic, because the wrong oil could lead to early piston damage. The concern is low-speed pre-ignition, a problem direct-injected turbo engines can have under heavy load at low rpm, and the dexos1 spec was revised to guard against it.

In practice that means no generic conventional oil in an Equinox. We use a dexos1-approved full synthetic in the grade on the cap. Our full synthetic page explains what that oil does differently.

Timing it in Carson City and Reno

GM's Oil Life System counts revolutions, temperature and distance, so there is no fixed mile number to memorize. The owner's manual asks for the change within 600 miles once Change Engine Oil Soon appears, and at least once a year no matter what. A small turbo working up the climb from Washoe Valley or across Jacks Valley Road heats its oil more than a flat freeway commute, and the system will count that.

Short winter trips are the other local factor. Carson City records 146 nights a year at or below freezing (NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals). An Equinox that only drives to school and back may never warm its oil fully, and the percentage drops faster for it.

Filters, AWD fluid and coolant

GM's schedule calls for a cabin air filter inspection every 22,500 miles or two years, with earlier replacement in dust or poor air quality. In a smoke summer that can mean once a season; our cabin filter guide covers the signs. The engine air filter is tracked on mileage and checked at each visit.

AWD models have a rear drive unit with its own fluid, and we look for seepage around it. Coolant is DEX-COOL, which GM designs for 5 years or 150,000 miles.

The visit

No appointment at any of our four service centers. We confirm the engine and drivetrain, drain, replace the filter, fill with dexos1 0W-20 to the right quart count and reset the Oil Life System. The maintenance check covers the air and cabin filters, fluids, battery test at participating locations, tire pressure, lights and wipers. You get the findings and the choice.

Current 1.5L turbo models take dexos1 0W-20 full synthetic, per GM's 2026 capacity chart. Older engines list their grade on the cap.

How many quarts in an Equinox?

GM lists 4.2 quarts for FWD and 5.3 quarts for AWD 1.5L models, with the filter.

Can I use regular oil in my Equinox?

GM's bulletin 16-NA-367 says its small turbo engines require dexos1 full synthetic, so we use that.

Do you reset the oil life percentage?

Yes, every time. GM says the system will not reset itself.
