Chevy Express Van Oil Change: Every Engine Since 2016
Every gas Express van since 2016 takes 5W-30, with 6.0 quarts for the 4.3L V6 and the 4.8L and 6.0L V8s and 8.0 quarts for the 6.6L V8 that arrived for 2021, per GM's TechLink capacity charts; the 2.8L Duramax diesel takes dexos2 5W-30 and 6.0 quarts. The van's Oil Life System sets the interval, and GM's severe-service list includes delivery use, which describes most vans we see.

The Express is the van behind a lot of Northern Nevada businesses: plumbers, electricians, cleaning crews, church groups and airport shuttles. It has been built on the same basic platform for decades, but the engines under the doghouse have changed several times, and a fleet manager with a mixed lot can easily have three different oil specs parked side by side. This page sorts them out and explains how we keep records for a working van.
At a glance
- 4.3L V6 (LV1) and 6.0L V8 (L96): 5W-30, 6.0 quarts
- 6.6L V8 (L8T, 2021 on): dexos1 5W-30, 8.0 quarts
- 2.8L Duramax diesel (LWN): dexos2 5W-30, 6.0 quarts
- Delivery and frequent towing put a van on GM's severe-service list

Express engines by GM chart year
The figures come from GM's TechLink engine oil capacity charts for 2016-2018, 2019-2020, 2021 and 2026. The 6.0L also appears as a CNG version (LC8) on the 2019-2020 chart with the same 6.0 quarts. The 2016 chart's 6.6L Duramax diesel is a much larger engine on heavy-duty diesel oil, and we treat it as a diesel pickup would be treated.
| Engine | Years on GM charts | Spec and grade | Quarts with filter |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4.8L V8 (L20) | 2016-2017 | 5W-30 | 6.0 |
| 6.0L V8 (L96) | 2016-2020 | 5W-30 | 6.0 |
| 6.6L V8 diesel (LGH) | 2016 | 15W-40 | 10.0 |
| 2.8L Duramax diesel (LWN) | 2017-2021 | dexos2 5W-30 | 6.0 |
| 4.3L V6 (LV1) | 2019-2026 | dexos1 5W-30 | 6.0 |
| 6.6L V8 gas (L8T) | 2021-2026 | dexos1 5W-30 | 8.0 |
Why a work van reaches zero sooner
GM's Oil Life System, as its owner manuals describe it, counts engine revolutions, engine temperature and miles, and calls for a change within 600 miles of the Change Engine Oil Soon message and at least once a year. GM's severe-service list in the same manuals names vehicles used for taxi, police or delivery service, frequent trailer towing, and heavy city traffic in hot weather.
A van that idles at job sites, makes twenty stops a day across Sparks and carries a full shelving load lives on that list. The monitor counts the idle time and the heat, so the percentage falls faster than the odometer suggests. We do not override it. We change the oil when it calls for it and log the date and mileage so the fleet record matches the van.
Height, racks and pulling in
Standard Express vans fit most drive-in bays, but a ladder rack, a roof-mounted unit or a cutaway box body changes the math. We have not published bay door heights for each service center yet, so call the shop before bringing a tall or upfitted van. The four phone numbers are on our locations page.
Cutaway Express chassis with box bodies or shuttle bodies also carry more weight than the van, and their filter and drain access can differ. Tell us what is on the back when you call.
Transmission, differential and coolant on a working van
Express vans use a GM automatic transmission, and a van that tows a trailer or runs loaded all day heats that fluid. We check for leaks at the pan and cooler lines on every visit and quote a transmission fluid service when the fluid or the schedule calls for it. The rear axle gets a look for seepage at the cover and pinion seal, and a differential service is available at the same stop.
Coolant is DEX-COOL. Reno's 65 summer days at 90 F or hotter (NOAA 1991 to 2020) are hard on a van idling with the A/C running at a job site, so we check the level and the overflow tank every time.
What each van gets
- Engine confirmed, the right spec and grade, a new filter and the exact quart count
- Oil Life System reset and the mileage and date written down for your fleet file
- Engine and cabin air filters inspected
- Transmission, axle and power steering checked for leaks and level where there is a dipstick
- Battery test at participating locations, belts, hoses, tire pressure on all four
- Lights and wipers, which matter on a van that works before sunrise
