Chevy Trailblazer Oil Change: Two Small Turbos, Two Grades
A 2021 and newer Trailblazer has either a 1.2L or a 1.3L three-cylinder turbo, and GM's capacity charts list dexos1 0W-20 with 4.8 quarts for the 1.3L, while the 1.2L moved from dexos1 5W-30 (the LIH engine, 2021 to 2024 charts) to dexos1 0W-20 (the LBP engine, 2026 chart), both at 4.2 quarts. When the oil is due is set by GM's Oil Life System, with the change made within 600 miles of the reminder and never less than once a year.

The small Chevy crossover with the old SUV name is a common sight in Carson City parking lots, and it is easy to get its oil wrong. Its two engines are tiny turbocharged three-cylinders, and the smaller one changed oil grade partway through its life when GM swapped in a revised engine. Here is how to tell them apart, what GM publishes for each, and why short winter trips in Carson matter more to this car than miles.
At a glance
- 1.3L turbo (L3T): dexos1 0W-20, 4.8 quarts with filter
- 1.2L turbo, LIH engine: dexos1 5W-30, 4.2 quarts (GM 2021 and 2024 charts)
- 1.2L turbo, LBP engine: dexos1 0W-20, 4.2 quarts (GM 2026 chart)
- Oil Life System: change within 600 miles of the message, at least yearly

Read the engine code before the oil
GM's TechLink capacity charts, the reference sheets GM publishes for service shops, list the Trailblazer by engine RPO code. The 2021 and 2024 charts show the 1.2L as the LIH engine on dexos1 5W-30 and the 1.3L as the L3T on dexos1 0W-20. The 2026 chart lists the 1.2L under a new code, LBP, and changes its grade to dexos1 0W-20 while the fill stays at 4.2 quarts with the filter.
So two Trailblazers with the same badge can need different bottles. We check the RPO label and the oil fill cap, and if the two disagree we go with what the cap and the owner's manual for that model year say.
| Engine | GM spec and grade | Quarts with filter | GM chart |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.2L turbo three (LIH) | dexos1 5W-30 | 4.2 | 2021 and 2024 |
| 1.2L turbo three (LBP) | dexos1 0W-20 | 4.2 | 2026 |
| 1.3L turbo three (L3T) | dexos1 0W-20 | 4.8 | 2021, 2024 and 2026 |
When GM says it is due
Like other current Chevrolets, the Trailblazer uses the Oil Life System that GM's owner manuals describe, the same wording printed in the 2024 Blazer Owner Manual. It counts engine revolutions, engine temperature and miles, and it calls for a change with a Change Engine Oil Soon message. GM asks for the change within the next 600 miles of that message and at least once a year, even if the display still shows oil life left.
A small turbo engine that makes its power from boost works its oil hard, and the monitor accounts for that. Trust the reading, and check the dipstick between visits because a three-cylinder holds little more than four quarts and a low level matters sooner.
Carson City winters and short trips
Carson City averages 146 nights a year at or below freezing on the NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals. A Trailblazer that makes a four-minute run to the store on a 20 F morning never fully warms its oil, and moisture and fuel collect in the crankcase. The Oil Life System sees the cold starts and shortens its estimate, which is exactly what it should do.
If most of your driving is short hops along Carson Street or College Parkway, a longer drive now and then on US-50 or I-580 lets the engine come up to temperature. Cold mornings also test the battery, so we run a battery test at participating locations while the oil drains.
Transmissions, filters and coolant
Front-drive Trailblazers use a continuously variable transmission, and the all-wheel-drive versions use a nine-speed automatic. They take different fluids, so a transmission fluid service starts with confirming which one you have. Coolant is GM's DEX-COOL.
The cabin filter on a Trailblazer is behind the glovebox, and in a dry, dusty valley with a smoke season most summers it clogs faster than the schedule assumes. We show you the filter, dust and all, and you decide whether it goes today.
What a Trailblazer visit covers
- Grade matched to the engine code and the cap, new filter, exact quart count
- Oil Life System reset and a windshield reminder
- Cabin and engine air filters inspected
- Battery test at participating locations, coolant level, belts
- Tire pressure, wipers, lights and washer fluid

Questions people ask
Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.
Is my Trailblazer a 1.2 or a 1.3?
The engine RPO code on the label in the glovebox or the spare tire area tells us: LIH or LBP is the 1.2L, L3T is the 1.3L. We check it before we pour.
Can I put 0W-20 in a 1.2L Trailblazer?
GM's 2026 chart lists 0W-20 for the LBP version of the 1.2L, while earlier charts list 5W-30 for the LIH version. Use what your cap and your manual say.
How much oil does a Trailblazer take?
GM lists 4.2 quarts with the filter for the 1.2L and 4.8 quarts for the 1.3L.
Does a Carson City Trailblazer need a smog check?
No. The Nevada DMV does not require emissions testing for vehicles registered in Carson City. Washoe-registered Trailblazers past their first three registrations do test.
