Chrysler Oil Changes: The Indicator, the Year Limit and the Grade

A current Chrysler tells you when oil is due through its oil change indicator, and the Stellantis owner's manuals add a hard ceiling: never more than 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. The Pacifica, Voyager and the V6 Chrysler 300 all run the 3.6-liter Pentastar, which takes a 0W-20 or 5W-20 oil to Chrysler standard MS-6395 depending on the year, so we read the oil cap before anything goes in.

Chrysler's lineup on Northern Nevada roads is mostly minivans and one big sedan. Pacificas haul soccer teams from Damonte Ranch to the fields in Sparks, Voyagers show up as church and shuttle vans, and the rear-drive 300 is still a favorite commuter on I-580 between Carson City and south Reno. All three share one way of deciding when the oil is due, and it is not a sticker in the corner of the windshield. Here is how the system works, what Chrysler asks for in the crankcase, and what our crews look at while the oil drains.

At a glance

  • Oil change indicator sets the timing; Stellantis manuals cap it at 10,000 miles or 12 months
  • When the Oil Change Required message shows, the manual asks for service within 500 miles
  • 3.6 Pentastar in the Pacifica and Voyager: 0W-20 to MS-6395, about 5 quarts with the filter (Chrysler's 2022 Pacifica fluid table)
  • Chrysler 300: about 6 quarts for the V6, 7 for the 5.7 HEMI and the 6.4 (Chrysler's 2023 300C fluid table)

How a Chrysler decides the oil is due

Chrysler does not print a fixed mileage on modern cars. The engine computer watches how the vehicle is driven and turns on an Oil Change Required message when the oil has done its work. The Stellantis owner's manual lists what pulls that message earlier: frequent short trips, trailer towing, extremely hot or cold temperatures and extended idling. Once it appears, the manual says to have the vehicle serviced as soon as possible, within the next 500 miles.

The second half of the rule is the one people miss. The same manual says that under no circumstances should the interval exceed 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. A Pacifica that only does school runs may never trip the indicator inside a year, but the calendar still says change it. Our oil change light reset guide covers how the message gets cleared after the service.

The grades current Chryslers list

Chrysler's 2022 Pacifica fluid table calls for SAE 0W-20 meeting Chrysler Material Standard MS-6395 in the 3.6-liter V6, about 5 quarts with the filter, and it tells owners to check the oil filler cap for the correct grade. The Voyager is the same van with a simpler trim list and the same engine.

The 300 is the outlier. Chrysler's 2023 300C fluid table lists about 6 quarts for the 3.6-liter V6 and 7 quarts for the 5.7-liter HEMI, both to MS-6395, and a 0W-40 to standard MS-12633 for the 6.4-liter V8 in the final 300C. Grades shifted between 0W-20 and 5W-20 over the years on the smaller engines, which is exactly why the cap wins over any chart. We carry full synthetic in each of those grades.

What else Chrysler puts on the list

The same fluid tables specify Mopar 10 year or 150,000 mile OAT coolant for these engines, and a ZF-type 8 and 9 speed ATF for the nine-speed in the minivans and the eight-speed in the 300. We do not mix coolant types; a coolant flush gets the OAT fill the table names. All-wheel-drive 300s add a transfer case and a rear axle with their own lubricants, and AWD Pacificas add a rear drive unit.

Cabin and engine air filters are on every Chrysler schedule too, and both are easy to inspect while the oil drains. We pull them and show you.

Why the indicator runs early here

The four triggers in the Chrysler manual describe a normal year in Northern Nevada. The Reno airport averages about 65 days a year at 90 F or hotter and 122 nights at or below freezing on the NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals, and Minden in the Carson Valley logs about 188 freezing nights. Add minivans idling in pickup lines, boat trailers on the way to Pyramid Lake and short winter errands, and the indicator often lights well before 10,000 miles. That is the system working, not a problem with the van.

Altitude adds load too. Our service centers sit between about 4,400 and 4,900 feet (USGS elevation data), so a loaded Pacifica climbing toward Spooner Summit is working its oil harder than it would at sea level.

Pull into 6100 Mae Anne Ave or 4993 Longley Ln in Reno, 1861 E College Pkwy in Carson City or 1293 US Hwy 395 N in Gardnerville. No appointment needed; service while you wait. We read the cap, drain the oil, fit a new filter, refill to the capacity in the table and reset the Oil Change Required message.

During the multi-point maintenance check we look at the air filter, the cabin filter on request, transmission fluid where there is a dipstick or check port, coolant, brake fluid, power steering where fitted, lights, wipers and tire pressure, and a battery test at participating locations. We tell you what we found and you decide what gets done today.

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

How often does Chrysler say to change the oil?

When the oil change indicator says so, and never later than 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first, per the Stellantis owner's manual. Short trips, towing, temperature extremes and idling bring the message on sooner.

The Oil Change Required message just came on. How soon do I need to come in?

The manual says as soon as possible, within the next 500 miles. Any of our four service centers can take it without an appointment.

What oil does a Chrysler Pacifica take?

Chrysler's 2022 Pacifica fluid table lists SAE 0W-20 meeting standard MS-6395, about 5 quarts with the filter. We confirm on the oil cap first.

Is the Chrysler 300 different?

Yes. The 300 had a V6, a 5.7 HEMI and, on the final 300C, a 6.4-liter V8. Chrysler's 2023 table lists about 6 quarts for the V6, 7 for the V8s, and a 0W-40 for the 6.4.

Can you reset the oil change indicator?

Yes. We reset it after every oil change so the next reminder counts from the fresh oil.
