Ford Escape Oil Change: Three Engines, Two Grades

Ford's 2025 Escape Owner's Manual lists SAE 0W-20 for the 1.5 EcoBoost (5.0 quarts with the filter) and the 2.5-liter hybrid and plug-in hybrid (5.71 quarts), and SAE 5W-30 for the 2.0 EcoBoost (6.13 quarts). The oil-life monitor sets the interval, up to one year or 10,000 miles, and Ford notes hybrids can run past 10,000 miles on the monitor.

The Escape is one of the few small SUVs where the engine you picked changes the oil grade, not just the amount. The fourth-generation Escape (2020 to 2025) came with a three-cylinder 1.5 EcoBoost, a four-cylinder 2.0 EcoBoost, a 2.5-liter hybrid and a plug-in hybrid. Two take 0W-20 and one takes 5W-30. We read the engine and the cap before we fill, and here is what Ford's manual says for each.

At a glance

  • 1.5 EcoBoost: SAE 0W-20 (WSS-M2C962-A1), 5.0 qt with the filter
  • 2.0 EcoBoost: SAE 5W-30 (WSS-M2C961-A1), 6.13 qt with the filter
  • 2.5 hybrid and plug-in hybrid: SAE 0W-20, 5.71 qt with the filter
  • Eight-speed automatic: Motorcraft MERCON ULV
  • Ford's yellow coolant can service cars built with the older orange coolant

Grade and capacity by engine

Ford's 2025 Escape manual names Motorcraft SAE 0W-20 to the WSS-M2C962-A1 specification for the 1.5-liter EcoBoost, 5.00 quarts with the filter, and for the 2.5-liter hybrid and plug-in hybrid, 5.71 quarts. The 2.0-liter EcoBoost gets SAE 5W-30 to WSS-M2C961-A1, 6.13 quarts, with 0W-30 listed for extremely cold climates.

Earlier Escapes from 2013 to 2019 used other engines, including a 1.6 EcoBoost and a 2.5 Duratec, with their own specifications. We check the cap and the engine on every one.

The oil-life monitor and the hybrid exception

Ford's manual says the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor can set an interval of up to one year or 10,000 miles, and that hybrid vehicles could exceed 10,000 miles. Change the oil within two weeks or 500 miles of the message, and reset the monitor. If the display ever resets early or stops working, the fallback is six months or 5,000 miles.

A plug-in hybrid Escape that runs mostly on battery can go a long time without many engine miles. The calendar still applies, and the monitor's one-year limit is the one that brings most plug-ins in.

Coolant and transmission notes

The 2025 manual lists Ford's yellow WSS-M97B57-A2 coolant for every Escape engine and explains that it is compatible with the earlier orange coolant, so a car built with orange can be serviced with yellow. A car built with yellow must stay on yellow. That matters for a coolant flush, and it is a question we ask before we open the system.

The eight-speed automatic used with the EcoBoost engines takes Motorcraft MERCON ULV, about 11.6 quarts in the unit per the manual. Hybrids use a different transmission with its own fluid.

Local driving, and what we check

Short winter trips are the Escape's local challenge. Reno averages about 122 nights a year at or below freezing on the NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals, and small turbo engines on short runs collect condensation in the oil; the monitor accounts for it, which is why your message may come sooner in winter.

At our service centers we confirm the engine, fill with the grade Ford names, fit a new filter, reset the monitor and run the multi-point check: battery, belts, coolant, washer fluid, wipers, lights, tire pressure and both air filters. You get a plain summary and the choice of what comes next.
