Ford F-350 Super Duty Oil Change: Power Stroke, Gas V8 and the Extras

Ford's 2024 Super Duty Owner's Manual lists 15.0 quarts with the filter for the 6.7-liter Power Stroke, using oil that meets Ford WSS-M2C171-F1, and 8.0 quarts of SAE 5W-30 for the 6.8 and 7.3-liter gas V8s. The oil-life monitor sets the interval, with a ceiling of one year or 15,000 miles on the diesel and 10,000 on the gas engines.

A pickup truck driving a snowy road in blowing wind

The F-350 shares its manual, engines and oil specs with the F-250, so the oil itself is the same story. What changes is how the truck is used. An F-350 is the one with the dually rear end, the gooseneck hitch and the steady diet of hay, feed and fifth-wheel campers, and on a diesel the oil change is only one of the fluids that keep it running. Diesel exhaust fluid, the fuel water separator and a cooling system that holds more than 30 quarts all come along with it. Here is what the 2024 Super Duty manual says about each.

At a glance

  • 6.7-liter Power Stroke: 15.0 qt with filter, oil to Ford WSS-M2C171-F1 (2024 Super Duty Owner's Manual)
  • 6.8 and 7.3-liter gas V8: SAE 5W-30 to WSS-M2C961-A1, 8.0 qt with filter
  • Diesel exhaust fluid tank: 7.5 gal on a complete truck, fluid to WSS-M99C130-A
  • Ford recommends an engine block heater below -9 F on the diesel

Oil, coolant and DEF capacities

All of the coolant is Ford's yellow WSS-M97B57-A2, and the manual notes that yellow coolant may darken over time, which is normal. The diesel's secondary loop cools the urea injector, so it is not optional. Ford also says to determine the diesel oil viscosity from the temperature range expected before the next change, using its SAE grade chart, and to buy oil that meets WSS-M2C171-F1 from the list at motorcraft.com.

Cold Carson Valley mornings and the block heater

The diesel section of the manual recommends an engine block heater below -9 F. That temperature is rare in Reno, but Minden averages about 75 nights a year at 20 F or colder and around two at or below 0 F on the NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals, so a truck that sits in a Gardnerville barn or a Smith Valley ranch yard should be plugged in on the worst nights. Cold-soaked diesel oil is thick, and the viscosity choice Ford describes is how you deal with it.

We note the grade that went in and the date on the sticker, so if you swap to a winter grade, the next shop knows.

Water in the fuel and the fuel filters

Every 6.7 has a fuel conditioner module with a water separator. Ford's manual says to drain it whenever the warning light or message comes on, which happens at about 6.76 fluid ounces of water, because water past that point can reach the injection system. The fuel filters are replaced at the scheduled interval or when the low fuel pressure message appears.

We can check for the message, look at the module and add a diesel fuel system cleaning if you want one. If the filters are coming due on Ford's schedule, we tell you what we saw so you can plan for it.

Before you pull in with a dually

A single-rear-wheel F-350 fits most lanes, but a dually with a tall flatbed or a camper shell is worth a call to the shop first so we can tell you which bay works. Fleet trucks get the same service with records kept per vehicle through our fleet program.

  • Oil and filter to the Ford spec, oil-life monitor reset, sticker with the grade
  • DEF level, coolant level and strength on both loops, and the water separator message
  • Engine and cabin air filters, which load up fast behind a hay trailer
  • Battery test on both batteries where fitted, belts, lights and tire pressure on all six

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

How much oil does an F-350 diesel take?

15.0 quarts with the filter, oil meeting Ford WSS-M2C171-F1, per Ford's 2024 Super Duty Owner's Manual.

Is the F-350 oil change the same as an F-250?

Yes for the oil itself. Both trucks share the 2024 Super Duty manual, engines and specs.

How often should a diesel Super Duty get an oil change?

When the oil-life monitor asks, with a ceiling of one year or 15,000 miles on the diesel, per Ford's manual. Heavy towing brings it sooner.

Does a diesel F-350 need a Nevada smog check?

The Nevada DMV tests diesels up to 14,000 lb GVWR registered in the Washoe testing area. A truck registered in Carson City, Douglas or Lyon County is not tested.
