Ford Fusion Oil Change: Every Engine, Plus the Hybrid

Ford stopped building the Fusion after the 2020 model year, but plenty of them still commute between Sparks, south Reno and Carson City, many past 100,000 miles. Over its run the Fusion offered a 2.5-liter four, 1.5 and 2.0-liter EcoBoost turbos, a 2.7 in the Sport, and a hybrid and plug-in Energi. The oil grade depends on which one is under the hood, and the 2020 manual's maintenance pages are some of the most detailed Ford printed. They are worth reading if you drive in the mountains or the heat.

Grade and capacity, engine by engine

Ford asks for oil that meets API SN PLUS with the API certification mark, and the gas engines list an alternative oil for extremely cold climates. The automatic transmissions take MERCON LV. Older Fusions and the 2.7-liter Sport have their own lines in their own year's manual, so on those we read the cap before we pour.

Ford's severe column reads like a Reno summer

The Normal Scheduled Maintenance page in the 2020 manual gives a table of when to expect the oil change message. Normal commuting with highway driving and flat to moderately hilly roads lands at 7,500 to 10,000 miles. Severe use, which Ford defines as moderate to heavy loads, mountainous or off-road conditions, extended idling or extended hot or cold operation, lands at 5,000 to 7,500. Extreme heat or cold and maximum loads bring it to 3,000 to 5,000.

Reno averages about 65 days a year at 90 F or hotter and 122 nights at or below freezing on the NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals, and the climb up Geiger Grade or the run to Carson on I-580 is mountain driving by any definition. Many local Fusions will see the message closer to the severe band. That is the monitor doing its job, not a fault.

Dust and the special operating conditions page

For cars operated mainly on unpaved or dusty roads, Ford's special operating conditions table changes the oil and filter every 5,000 miles or six months, calls for frequent inspection and replacement of the cabin and engine air filters, and on the gas cars changes the automatic transmission fluid every 30,000 miles. On the normal schedule, the cabin filter is replaced every 20,000 miles and the engine air filter every 30,000.

What is different on a Fusion Hybrid

The hybrid manual has the oil changed every 12 months or 10,000 miles when the message appears, and it carries two coolants: about 8.9 quarts of engine coolant and 1.1 quarts of inverter coolant, both Ford's yellow WSS-M97B57-A2. Ford puts the first replacement of both at 10 years or 200,000 miles, then every five years or 100,000.
