Ford Transit Oil Change: Work Vans at 4,500 Feet
Ford's 2024 Transit Owner's Manual lists SAE 5W-30 meeting WSS-M2C961-A1 for both 3.5-liter gas engines, with 6.0 quarts with the filter on the 3.5 EcoBoost. For the 3.5 PFDi, Ford recommends the 0W-30 alternative in vans regularly used above 5,000 feet in temperatures below minus 4 F, and the oil-life monitor sets the interval up to one year or 10,000 miles.

Transit vans are everywhere in Reno and Carson City: plumbers, electricians, delivery routes, shuttle services. Work vans live hard lives that look gentle on the odometer, with lots of idling, short hops and full loads. Ford's 2024 Transit manual has specific language about that kind of use, plus an altitude note that is unusual in an owner's manual and relevant to anyone who runs a van up to Incline Village or Truckee in winter.
At a glance
- 3.5 EcoBoost: SAE 5W-30, 6.0 qt with the filter (2024 Transit manual)
- 3.5 PFDi (non-turbo) V6: SAE 5W-30 to the same Ford spec
- Above 5,000 ft and below minus 4 F: Ford recommends 0W-30
- Ford: short trips, idling and low-speed driving can dilute the oil

Engine specifications
Ford's 2024 Transit manual lists SAE 5W-30 to Ford WSS-M2C961-A1 for both the 3.5-liter EcoBoost and the 3.5-liter PFDi V6, with SAE 0W-30 to WSS-M2C963-A1 as the alternative. The EcoBoost holds 6.0 quarts with the filter. The PFDi has its own capacity in the manual, and we fill to that number and confirm on the dipstick.
The manual also cautions against adding more than about one liter of an alternative oil between scheduled services, which is a good reason to top off with the right grade.
Ford's altitude note
In the 3.5-liter PFDi's oil section, Ford recommends the alternative 0W-30 if the vehicle is regularly used above 5,000 feet and below minus 4 F. Our service centers sit between about 4,400 and 4,900 feet per USGS elevation data, and plenty of vans climb well above 5,000 feet on routes to Lake Tahoe, Incline Village or Virginia City. The minus 4 F part is rare in the valley, though Minden averages about two nights a year at or below 0 F on the NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals. If your van parks overnight at elevation in January, ask us which grade fits your route.
Idling, short trips and the monitor
Ford's gasoline Transit maintenance section says the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor can set an interval of up to one year or 10,000 miles, and it warns that short trips that do not let the engine reach operating temperature, extended idling and long low-speed driving can dilute the oil and raise its level. That is a typical service-van day. When the message appears, Ford asks for the change within two weeks or 500 miles.
For fleets, our fleet program keeps a dated record of every service, so you can show each van followed Ford's schedule.
What we check on a work van
- Oil level before draining, so dilution or consumption shows up
- 5W-30 or 0W-30 as Ford's manual and your route call for, new filter, monitor reset
- Coolant, belts, hoses and battery, since idling vans run electrical loads hard
- Tire pressure for loaded vans, lights, wipers and both air filters
- A written list for the fleet manager
