GMC Sierra 1500 Oil Changes by Engine, From the 2.7L Turbo to the 6.2L V8
A Sierra 1500 has no fixed mileage interval: the GM Oil Life System tells you when, and GMC says to change the oil and filter at least once a year even if the monitor has not asked. The grade depends on the engine, and GM's 2026 capacity table lists dexos1 0W-20 for the 5.3L and 6.2L V8s, dexos1 5W-30 for the 2.7L turbo and dexosD 0W-20 for the 3.0L Duramax diesel.

Half-ton GMC pickups do a lot of different jobs around here: a commute from Spanish Springs, a ski rack up the Mount Rose Highway, a boat behind them on the way to Pyramid Lake. GM's answer to that range is a monitor rather than a number. The Oil Life System estimates how fast the oil is wearing based on how the truck is actually used, so a Sierra that tows every weekend will call for oil sooner than one that cruises I-580. Our job in the bay is to pour the right grade for your engine, fit the right filter and reset that monitor so the next estimate starts from zero.
At a glance
- 5.3L and 6.2L V8: dexos1 0W-20, about 8 quarts with the filter (GM TechLink 2026 table)
- 2.7L turbo four: dexos1 5W-30, about 6 quarts (same table)
- 3.0L Duramax diesel: dexosD 0W-20, about 7 quarts (same table)
- Oil and filter at least once a year, and the monitor reset every time (GMC)

Which oil your Sierra 1500 takes
GM's 2026 engine oil capacities table, published on GM TechLink in February 2026, lists four Sierra 1500 engines. The 5.3L V8 (engine code L84) and the 6.2L V8 (L87) both take dexos1 0W-20 and hold about 8 quarts with the filter. The 2.7L turbo four (L3B) takes dexos1 5W-30 and about 6 quarts. The 3.0L inline-six Duramax (LZ0) takes dexosD 0W-20 and about 7 quarts. dexos1 is GM's own gasoline-engine approval and dexosD its diesel one, and a bottle only qualifies if it carries the dexos approval mark.
One exception matters for 2021 to 2024 trucks with the 6.2L. Under GM safety recall 25V-274, NHTSA documents describe a remedy for engines that pass inspection that switches them to 0W-40 oil and fits a new oil-fill cap. If your cap reads 0W-40, that is the grade we pour. If you are not sure whether your truck was part of it, we read the cap first and you can look up the VIN on NHTSA's recall page.
The same table notes that cold-temperature viscosities are in the owner's manual. Older Sierras from before 2026 may show a different grade on the cap than the table, and the cap and the manual for your model year govern.
How the Oil Life System sets the interval
GMC's support page on engine oil says the monitor estimates oil life from how the vehicle is used, that the oil should be changed within about 600 miles once the CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message appears, and that the oil and filter must be changed at least once a year with the system reset, even if the monitor has not reached zero. Under the gentlest driving, GMC notes, the monitor might not call for service for more than a year, which is exactly why the yearly rule exists.
Towing, idling, short winter trips and long grades all pull the percentage down faster. A Sierra hauling a trailer over the Washoe Valley stretch of I-580 in July, when the Reno airport averages close to 24 days at 90 F or hotter (NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals), is working the oil harder than the same truck on a spring commute, and the monitor accounts for that.
Filters, fluids and the rest of the truck
- Oil filter: GM lists the PF63 for the V8s and the PF66 for the 2.7L turbo and the Duramax; we fit the filter your engine calls for.
- Engine air filter: the high desert is dusty, Reno gets about 7.35 inches of precipitation a year (NOAA), and dirt-road trips clog it faster; we show it to you.
- Rear axle and transfer case on four-wheel-drive trucks: covered by our differential service with the gear oil GM specifies.
- Automatic transmission: it is on GM's own schedule; towing pushes a truck toward the heavier column, and our transmission fluid service uses the fluid GM names.
- Coolant: GM fills these trucks with long-life DEX-COOL; we test its freeze protection before winter, when the Reno airport averages 122 nights at or below freezing (NOAA).
A Sierra 1500 visit in our bay
- Pull into Mae Anne Avenue or Longley Lane in Reno, College Parkway in Carson City or US 395 in Gardnerville. No appointment.
- We read the oil-fill cap and match the engine to the grade and filter in GM's table.
- Drain, new filter, refill to the capacity for that engine, then the multi-point maintenance check: air and cabin filters, fluids, belts, lights, wipers and tire pressure.
- Reset the Oil Life System to 100 percent and walk you through what we saw. You decide what, if anything, comes next.

Questions people ask
Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.
How often does a GMC Sierra 1500 need an oil change?
When the Oil Life System calls for it, and at least once a year regardless. GMC says to change it within about 600 miles of the CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message.
Can I use 5W-30 in my 5.3L Sierra?
GM's table lists dexos1 0W-20 for the 5.3L. We pour what the cap and manual specify, which for most 5.3L trucks is 0W-20.
My 6.2L Sierra cap says 0W-40. Is that right?
It can be. GM recall 25V-274 changes some 2021 to 2024 6.2L engines to 0W-40 with a new cap. We follow the cap.
Do you change oil on the 3.0L Duramax?
Yes. It takes a dexosD-approved 0W-20, not a gasoline-only oil, and we pour the diesel-approved product. See our diesel oil change page.
Does my Sierra need a smog check?
Only if it is registered in the Washoe testing area, yearly after the first three registrations (Nevada DMV). Both Reno service centers do smog checks; Carson City and Douglas County registrations do not need one.
