GMC Sierra 2500HD: Gas or Duramax, the Oil Is Different

The first question on a Sierra 2500HD is which 6.6 liter is under the hood. GM's 2026 capacity table lists dexos1 5W-30 and about 8 quarts for the gas V8, and a CK-4 or CJ-4 15W-40 diesel oil and about 10 quarts for the Duramax, with the GM Oil Life System and a once-a-year minimum setting the interval for both.

A pickup truck on a slushy winter highway

Heavy-duty Sierras around Northern Nevada pull horse trailers out of Washoe Valley, fifth wheels toward the Carson Valley, and work trailers to job sites from Fernley to Minden. That load profile is why GM gives the HD two very different engines with the same displacement. The gas L8T and the diesel L5P share a 6.6 badge and almost nothing at the drain plug: different oil chemistry, different viscosity, different volume. We start every 2500HD by confirming which one we are looking at.

The two engines and what each one takes

Those figures come from GM's 2026 engine oil capacities table on GM TechLink, which covers the Sierra HD 2500 and 3500. The table also says to check the owner's manual for cold-temperature viscosities. That line matters for a diesel parked overnight in Gardnerville, where the Minden station averages 75 nights a year at 20 F or colder (NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals), because the manual's cold-weather chart is where any lighter grade would come from.

A diesel oil is not interchangeable with the gasoline product, even in the same viscosity. The Duramax needs a diesel category on the bottle, and the gas engine needs the dexos1 approval. We pour each from its own stock.

When the oil is due on a heavy-duty truck

GM does not print one mileage number for these trucks. The Oil Life System watches how the engine is used and counts down, and GMC's support page says to change the oil within about 600 miles of the CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message and at least once a year with a reset, even when the percentage is still high.

Towing is what moves that percentage. A loaded climb out of the Truckee River canyon on I-80, or a summer run up US-395 with the Reno airport averaging about 65 days a year at 90 F or more (NOAA), shortens the estimate on its own. Trucks that idle at job sites through the winter shorten it too. If your truck spends its life hooked to a trailer, do not be surprised if it asks for oil well before the neighbor's.

What else we look at on a 2500HD

  • Front axle, rear axle and transfer case on 4x4 trucks, which see the most strain under a trailer; our differential service uses the gear oil GM lists.
  • The automatic transmission fluid level and condition, with a transmission fluid service if you choose one.
  • Coolant strength and hoses, since a heavy truck making heat on a grade relies on them.
  • On the Duramax, the diesel exhaust fluid level and any service messages on the cluster, which we point out; we do not service the emissions system.
  • Engine and cabin air filters, which dust from ranch roads and wildfire smoke load up quickly.

Drive-in service for the big trucks

All four service centers take heavy-duty pickups without an appointment: Mae Anne Avenue in northwest Reno, Longley Lane in south Reno, College Parkway in Carson City and US 395 in Gardnerville. Tell us at the window if you are towing soon; we will check the fluids that matter for that trip and reset the Oil Life System after the change.

Fleet owners running several HD trucks can keep service records through our fleet program. Weekdays we open at 8 in Reno and Carson City and at 9 in Gardnerville, with Saturday hours at every service center.

Carson City

All of the crew at the Carson City location are fantastic. They are efficient and knowledgeable. Very helpful and not pushy with sales of something you might not need. We use them for all of our vehicles. They consistently go above and beyond!

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

What oil does a Duramax 2500HD take?

GM's 2026 table lists an API CK-4 or CJ-4 15W-40 diesel oil and about 10 quarts with the filter for the L5P. The manual's cold-temperature chart covers lighter grades.

What oil does the 6.6L gas Sierra HD take?

dexos1 5W-30, about 8 quarts with the filter, per GM's 2026 capacities table.

Does towing change the interval?

Yes, through the Oil Life System. Heavy towing, idling and heat make it count down faster. GMC also says to change the oil at least once a year.

Does a diesel Sierra need a Nevada smog check?

In the Washoe testing area, diesels up to 14,000 lb GVWR are tested yearly after the first three registrations (Nevada DMV). Our diesel smog guide explains it. Smog checks are at our two Reno service centers, on Mae Anne Avenue and on Longley Lane.
