Honda Civic Oil Change: 0W-20 and the Maintenance Minder
Honda's 2024 Civic Owner's Manual calls for SAE 0W-20 in both engines, with 3.7 quarts including the filter for the 1.5-liter turbo and 4.4 quarts for the 2.0-liter. Honda does not print a fixed mileage; the Maintenance Minder calculates oil life from how the car is driven and asks for a change when it falls to about 15 percent, or once a year if no message appears.

Civic owners often ask us for the mileage, and Honda's honest answer is that there isn't one. Since the mid-2000s Honda has used the Maintenance Minder, a system that watches engine operating conditions and counts down oil life as a percentage. It is smarter than a sticker for the normal case, but it does not know that you park on a dirt lot or crawl up a mountain road behind snow traffic, and Honda's manual says those things change the schedule. Here is what the 2024 Civic book actually says.
At a glance
- 1.5-liter turbo: SAE 0W-20, 3.7 qt with the filter
- 2.0-liter: SAE 0W-20, 4.4 qt with the filter
- Maintenance Minder: 'Due Soon' at 15 percent, 'Due Now' at 5 percent
- No message in 12 months? Honda says change the oil anyway
- CVT models use Honda HCF-2 fluid, about 3.9 qt

Grade and capacity from Honda's 2024 manual
The Specifications page of Honda's 2024 Civic Sedan manual lists Honda Genuine Motor Oil 0W-20 or an API Premium-grade 0W-20 detergent oil for both engines. The 1.5-liter turbo takes 3.4 quarts for a plain change and 3.7 quarts with the filter. The 2.0-liter takes 4.2 and 4.4 quarts.
Earlier Civics from roughly 2012 onward also list 0W-20; much older ones may list 5W-20 or 5W-30. We check the cap and the year before we pour, and we change the filter every time, even when the Minder code is only an A.
How to read the codes on your dash
The 2024 manual describes the Minder in plain steps. Oil life is shown in ten-percent steps. At 15 percent you get Maintenance Due Soon, at 5 percent Maintenance Due Now, and once it passes zero the display counts negative miles. Each message comes with a letter and numbers. A means replace the engine oil; B means oil, filter and a list of inspections. The numbers are sub items: 1 is a tire rotation, 2 is the engine air filter, cabin filter and drive belt, 3 is transmission fluid, 4 is spark plugs and valve clearance, 5 is engine coolant and 7 is brake fluid.
Tell us the code when you pull in, or we will read it off the dash. That code is how we know what Honda is asking for at this visit.
Footnotes that apply in Northern Nevada
Honda's Civic manual says to replace the air cleaner element every 15,000 miles if you drive in dusty conditions, regardless of what the Minder shows. High desert dust qualifies, and so does a daily commute down a gravel road in Lemmon Valley or Washoe Valley.
For CVT cars it adds that driving in mountainous areas at very low speeds raises transmission temperature, and owners who regularly drive that way should change the CVT fluid every 25,000 miles; on the manual gearbox it is every 37,500. Crawling up Kingsbury Grade or the Mount Rose Highway behind chain-control traffic is close to what Honda describes. A transmission fluid service with Honda HCF-2 handles it.
What we do in the bay
We drain the oil, fit a new filter, refill with 0W-20 to the manual's capacity and reset the Maintenance Minder so it starts counting from 100 percent again. The multi-point check covers the items behind the Minder's B code: fluid levels and condition, brakes by visual inspection through the wheel, belts, lights, wipers, battery and tire pressure. You see what we see and decide. Walk in at any of our four service centers, Monday through Saturday.

What a customer said
Rolled up for a oil change. The technician said they always check the oil first to see if you even need it. He found out that at my last oil change (at a different place) they put the wrong oil in!! I had only gone 3500 miles and the oil was black. With the correct oil my Honda CRV should run up to 7000 miles before needing a change. I love that they will tell you if you are due or not! The staff was friendly and quick.

Questions people ask
Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.
How many miles between oil changes on a Civic?
Honda lets the Maintenance Minder decide based on how the car is driven. Change the oil when it shows the Due Soon or Due Now message, and at least once a year.
What does code B1 mean on my Civic?
Per Honda's 2024 manual, B means oil, filter and an inspection list, and 1 means rotate the tires.
Will you reset my Maintenance Minder?
Yes, on every oil change at all four service centers.
Does my Civic need a smog check?
If it is registered in the Washoe testing area and past its first three registrations, yes, yearly at renewal per the Nevada DMV. Our Reno service centers on Mae Anne Avenue and Longley Lane do the test.
