Honda HR-V Oil Change: Small Crossover, Specific Fluids

The HR-V grew for 2023, picking up a 2.0-liter engine in place of the earlier 1.8 and a CVT tuned to feel more like a regular automatic. It is a popular first car and a popular downsizer's car, which means a lot of HR-Vs in our bays do short trips and low annual mileage. That is the situation where Honda's calendar rule matters most. AWD versions add a rear differential with its own fluid.

What Honda's 2024 HR-V manual lists

The Specifications page lists Honda Genuine Motor Oil 0W-20 or an API service SN or higher 0W-20, with 4.2 quarts for an oil change and 4.4 quarts including the filter. The CVT takes Honda HCF-2 Transmission Fluid, and the AWD rear differential takes Honda DPSF-II, about 1.318 quarts.

HR-Vs from 2016 to 2022 have the smaller 1.8-liter engine with its own capacity, and we check the cap and year before we fill either one.

The Minder, plus the calendar

The HR-V's Maintenance Minder counts oil life down from 100 percent and shows a code at 15 percent. Sub item 6 on this model is rear differential fluid, which is why an AWD HR-V can come in with a code like B16. If the car is driven so little that no message appears for more than 12 months after a reset, Honda says to change the oil every year regardless.

Short trips in cold weather are where that yearly rule earns its place. Reno averages about 122 freezing nights a year, Carson City about 146 and Minden about 188, on the NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals. An HR-V that drives a mile to the store on those mornings builds up moisture in the oil long before the percentage gets low.

Dust and mountain footnotes

Honda's HR-V manual footnotes an engine air filter replacement every 15,000 miles in dusty conditions, a dust and pollen filter replacement every 15,000 miles where soot is heavy, and a CVT fluid change every 25,000 miles for owners who regularly drive mountain roads at very low speeds. The CVT note fits anyone who commutes up a steep grade in stop-and-go traffic. We can handle a transmission fluid service with HCF-2 at the same stop.
