Hyundai Accent Oil Changes: What the Book Says for the 1.6

The 2020 Accent Owner's Manual lists 4.02 US quarts for the Smartstream G1.6 and recommends SAE 0W-20 at the latest API or ILSAC rating. Hyundai's normal schedule changes the oil and filter every 7,500 miles or 12 months; the severe schedule every 3,750 miles or 6 months.

A two-lane highway through snow-dusted hills

Hyundai stopped selling the Accent in the US after the 2022 model year, which means every one we see now has some years on it, and many are on their second or third owner. The last generation ran from 2018 to 2022. From 2020 it used the Smartstream 1.6-liter four with either a six-speed manual or Hyundai's IVT, a continuously variable automatic. These are honest, cheap-to-run commuters, and a lot of them in Carson Valley rack up miles on US-395 between Gardnerville, Minden and the state offices in Carson City.

At a glance

  • Smartstream G1.6 (2020 to 2022): 4.02 US qt, 0W-20 recommended (2020 Accent Owner's Manual)
  • Normal schedule: 7,500 miles or 12 months
  • Severe schedule: 3,750 miles or 6 months, conditions A to K
  • Climate control air filter: Hyundai says replace every 12 months

Grade, rating and fill

The recommended lubricants table in Hyundai's 2020 Accent manual lists the engine oil at 4.02 US quarts on a drain and refill, classified API Latest (ILSAC Latest) or ACEA C5. Its viscosity chart allows 0W-20, 0W-30, 5W-20 and 5W-30 across normal temperatures, and a footnote recommends 0W-20 for better fuel economy, with 5W-30 as the fallback if 0W-20 cannot be found. We use a 0W-20 full synthetic unless your cap or your own preference says otherwise.

Accents from 2018 and 2019 used the earlier Gamma 1.6 and a six-speed automatic. Their manual has its own numbers, and we look them up rather than guess.

Sand, wind and the severe column

Hyundai's severe list for this Accent is broad. The oil row covers all eleven conditions: short trips, extended idling, rough or dusty or gravel roads, salt or very cold weather, sandy areas, heavy traffic over 90 F, mountain roads, towing or a roof rack, commercial use, speeds over 106 mph, and frequent stop-and-go. Any one of them puts the oil on 3,750 miles or 6 months.

Condition E, driving in sandy areas, is the one Carson Valley owners overlook. The spring wind that sweeps across the valley floor carries grit off the open ground, and the Minden station averages about 188 freezing nights a year on the NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals, which covers condition D too. A Gardnerville Accent parked outside is usually a 3,750-mile car, and the air filter tells the same story.

The rest of the 2020 Accent schedule

  • IVT fluid: no check, no service required on the normal schedule; replace every 60,000 miles under severe use. Manual transmission fluid: every 75,000 miles under severe use.
  • Engine air filter: inspect and replace at 22,500-mile intervals on the normal schedule, more often in dust or sand.
  • Climate control air filter: replace every 12 months, more often in dust or sand.
  • Engine coolant: first at 120,000 miles or 10 years, then every 30,000 miles or 24 months.
  • Spark plugs: every 97,500 miles.

Many Accents still on the road are near or past that first coolant change at ten years. If yours is, we will mention it and you can decide on a coolant flush now or later.

Bring the Accent to Gardnerville, Carson or Reno

  1. Drive in at US 395 in Gardnerville, College Parkway in Carson City, or Mae Anne Avenue or Longley Lane in Reno. No appointment.
  2. We check the dipstick, then drain the oil and fit a new filter.
  3. We refill to Hyundai's 4.02 quarts and confirm the level.
  4. The multi-point maintenance check covers the air filter, cabin filter, IVT or manual transmission fluid where it can be checked, coolant, battery, lights, wipers and tires.
  5. We reset the reminder and give you a plain list of anything coming due.

What oil does a Hyundai Accent take?

For the 2020 to 2022 Smartstream 1.6, Hyundai recommends SAE 0W-20 at the latest API or ILSAC rating, with 5W-30 allowed if 0W-20 is not available (2020 Accent Owner's Manual).

How much oil goes in an Accent?

4.02 US quarts on a drain and refill, per the 2020 manual.

How often should I change oil in my Accent?

Every 7,500 miles or 12 months on the normal schedule, or 3,750 miles or 6 months under severe conditions such as short trips, dust, sand or very cold weather.

My Accent has over 120,000 miles. Should I switch oils?

Many owners choose a high-mileage oil at that point. We check for leaks and how much it used since the last change, and you decide.

Does an Accent from Douglas County need a smog check?

No. Douglas County does not require one for registration (Nevada DMV). If you move it to Washoe County registration, it will.
