Hyundai Tucson Oil Changes: What the 2025 Manual Asks For

The gas Tucson's 2.5L engine takes about 6.13 quarts of full synthetic 0W-20 rated API SN PLUS or SP or ILSAC GF-6, according to Hyundai's 2025 owner's manual. Change it every 8,000 miles or 12 months under normal use, or every 5,000 miles or 6 months under the severe and low-mileage schedule.

The Tucson is the Hyundai we see most at all four service centers. It is the right size for a Northern Nevada household: room for a dog and the camping gear, all-wheel drive for a snowy Kingsbury Grade, and good mileage on the long highway runs between towns. Hyundai's current manual is clear about what it needs, and also about the habits that move it onto the shorter schedule.

At a glance

  • Full synthetic 0W-20, API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6 (Hyundai 2025 manual)
  • About 6.13 US quarts with the filter
  • Normal: 8,000 miles or 12 months. Severe and low mileage: 5,000 miles or 6 months
  • HTRAC AWD: rear differential and transfer case use 75W-85 GL-5 gear oil

Low mileage counts as severe

Hyundai titles the shorter Tucson schedule maintenance under severe usage and low mileage conditions. A Tucson that sits most of the week and makes short hops to the store is on it, just like one that tows a pop-up camper. The oil row replaces oil and filter every 5,000 miles or 6 months under those conditions.

Six months matters as much as the mileage. Many retirees in the Carson Valley, where the median age in Gardnerville is about 56 (ACS 2020-2024), drive a few thousand miles a year. On those cars the calendar line comes due first, and we will put the date on the sticker, not just the odometer reading.

The other Tucson schedule items

The 2025 normal schedule lists automatic transmission fluid as no check and no service required. On the severe schedule, Hyundai lists replacement every 60,000 miles. Spark plugs on the 2.5L are due at 96,000 miles. Engine coolant is first replaced at 120,000 miles or 120 months and then every 24,000 miles or 24 months. Brake fluid is inspected every year and replaced every 48 months.

HTRAC all-wheel-drive Tucsons have a rear differential and a transfer case. The lubricants page lists 75W-85 GL-5 hypoid gear oil for both, in small quantities, and the severe schedule replaces both every 72,000 miles. Our differential service uses that gear oil, and our AWD differential guide explains why these small reservoirs deserve attention.

Why the dust clause applies here

The air cleaner filter is inspected at most yearly columns and replaced every 36 months on the normal schedule, and Hyundai says to replace it more often on dusty or unpaved roads. The Reno airport records about 7.35 inches of precipitation a year (NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals). Add the gravel roads around Washoe Valley and Johnson Lane and summer smoke, and a Tucson's filters work hard. We pull both the engine and cabin filters at every visit so you can see them.

Tucson in our bay

  1. No appointment: Mae Anne Avenue, Longley Lane, College Parkway or US 395.
  2. Full synthetic 0W-20 to the listed capacity, with a new filter.
  3. The maintenance check, including the HTRAC fluids on AWD models if you ask.
  4. Oil-life reminder reset and a sticker set by date and mileage, whichever you will hit first.

Great place for high quality service and minor repairs. Wal Mart ruined my car and they fixed it!

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

How often should I change the oil in a 2025 Tucson?

Every 8,000 miles or 12 months on Hyundai's normal schedule, or every 5,000 miles or 6 months under the severe and low-mileage schedule.

How much oil does a Tucson hold?

About 6.13 US quarts for the 2.5L, per Hyundai's 2025 lubricants table.

Does the Tucson's transmission fluid ever get changed?

The normal schedule lists no service. Hyundai's severe schedule replaces it every 60,000 miles, and our transmission fluid service uses the specified fluid.

What about the Tucson Hybrid?

It uses a 1.6L turbo and its own manual. We follow that manual's grade and interval.
