Hyundai Santa Cruz Oil Changes: 2.5L or 2.5L Turbo

The 2022 Santa Cruz Owner's Manual lists SAE 0W-20 for the 2.5L engine and SAE 0W-30 for the 2.5L turbo, both API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6 full synthetic, at about 6.1 and 6.9 quarts. Under severe use, which includes towing and dusty roads, Hyundai replaces the oil and filter every 5,000 miles or 6 months.

The Santa Cruz is Hyundai's small open-bed pickup, built since the 2022 model year on a crossover platform. Owners around Reno tend to use the bed for exactly what it is good at: mountain bikes for Peavine, a pair of kayaks for Washoe Lake, bags of mulch from the garden center. Some tow a small boat out to Pyramid Lake. There are two engines, a 2.5-liter four and a 2.5-liter turbo, and they do not take the same oil. That is the first thing we confirm when one pulls in.

At a glance

  • 2.5L GDI: about 6.13 US qt of SAE 0W-20 (2022 Santa Cruz Owner's Manual)
  • 2.5L turbo: about 6.87 US qt of SAE 0W-30
  • Severe schedule: oil and filter every 5,000 miles or 6 months
  • Hyundai recommends the severe schedule after 10 years or 100,000 miles

Two engines, two grades

Those come from the recommended lubricants page of the 2022 manual, which requires an API latest full synthetic and says that a lower grade such as mineral or semi-synthetic oil puts the truck on the severe schedule. The turbo's 0W-30 is a step thicker than most Hyundais use, and pouring 0W-20 into it is the mistake to avoid. Turbo trucks also pair with a wet dual-clutch transmission, while the 2.5L uses a conventional automatic.

Copies of the capacity table vary a little by year and print, so we fill close to Hyundai's figure, run the engine, and bring it to the full mark on the dipstick.

Bed loads, boats and the severe schedule

The severe usage table in the 2022 Santa Cruz manual replaces engine oil and filter every 5,000 miles or 6 months under conditions A through L. Those include short trips, idling, rough or dusty or gravel roads, salt or very cold weather, heavy dust, heavy traffic, mountain roads, towing a trailer or using a camper or roof load, commercial use, high speed or hard acceleration, stop-and-go, and oil that is not the recommended type. Hyundai also says that after 10 years or 100,000 miles it recommends the severe schedule.

The road out to Pyramid Lake is paved, but the beaches and boat launch approaches are not, and a boat on the hitch is condition H by itself. A Santa Cruz used that way belongs on 5,000 miles. For lighter use, follow the normal table in your truck's manual and the oil life reminder on the cluster. If the reminder and the sticker disagree, we go with whichever comes first.

AWD, transmission and cooling

  • Automatic transmission (2.5L): replace every 60,000 miles under severe conditions A, C, E, F, G, H, I and K.
  • Dual-clutch transmission (turbo): replace every 56,000 miles under severe conditions A, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J and K.
  • Rear differential and transfer case (AWD): replace every 72,000 miles under severe conditions, 75W-85 GL-5 hypoid gear oil.
  • Engine and cabin air filters: replace more often in dust or sand, conditions C and E.
  • Coolant: an ethylene glycol mix for aluminum radiators. We check the level and condition at every visit.

Towing and dirt-road owners often pair the oil change with a differential service when the AWD fluids come due.

What we do on a Santa Cruz

Pull in at Mae Anne Avenue, Longley Lane, College Parkway or US 395, no appointment. We confirm turbo or non-turbo from the engine and the cap, drain the oil, fit a new filter and refill with the matching full synthetic grade. Then the multi-point maintenance check: air filters, transmission and AWD fluid levels where they can be checked, coolant, brake fluid, battery, belts, lights, wipers, tire pressure and a look underneath for anything the trail left behind. We reset the reminder and you leave with a list of what is next and when.

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

What oil does a Hyundai Santa Cruz take?

The 2.5L takes SAE 0W-20 and the 2.5L turbo takes SAE 0W-30, both full synthetic rated API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6, per the 2022 Santa Cruz Owner's Manual.

How much oil does a Santa Cruz hold?

About 6.13 US quarts for the 2.5L and about 6.87 US quarts for the turbo on a drain and refill. We finish to the dipstick.

Does towing change the oil interval?

Yes. Towing is condition H on Hyundai's severe list, which sets the oil and filter at 5,000 miles or 6 months.

How do I know if mine is the turbo?

Look at the engine size in your manual or on the original window sticker, or just ask us. We confirm it at the engine before choosing the oil.

Does a Santa Cruz registered in Washoe County need a smog check?

Yes, every year after its first three registrations in the Washoe testing area (Nevada DMV). Our Reno shops do smog checks.
