Mazda CX-30 Oil Change: Two Engines, Two Grades

Mazda's 2023 CX-30 Owner's Manual calls for SAE 0W-20 in the non-turbo Skyactiv-G 2.5 and SAE 5W-30 in the 2.5 Turbo, about 4.8 and 5.1 US quarts with the filter. The 2024 CX-30 scheduled maintenance guide lets the vehicle status monitor call the change, never later than 10,000 miles or 12 months, and fixes it at 5,000 miles or 6 months for severe driving.

The CX-30 is the small Mazda crossover we see parked outside offices in Sparks and on the hillside streets above Mae Anne Avenue. It looks like one car, but under the hood it can be one of two engines that want different oil, and Mazda gives it two ways to time the change. Getting both right is most of what a good CX-30 oil service is about, so here is what Mazda actually prints.

At a glance

  • Skyactiv-G 2.5 (non-turbo): SAE 0W-20, 4.8 US qt with filter (2023 CX-30 Owner's Manual)
  • Skyactiv-G 2.5 Turbo: SAE 5W-30, 5.1 US qt with filter (same manual)
  • Normal schedule: wrench light, maximum 10,000 miles or 12 months (2024 CX-30 scheduled maintenance)
  • Severe schedule: oil and filter every 5,000 miles or 6 months, set on the monitor by hand

Turbo or not: the grade follows the badge

Mazda's U.S. manual is specific here: 0W-20 for the naturally aspirated engine and 5W-30 for the turbo, each carrying the API gasoline-engine starburst and the ILSAC mark. A turbo CX-30 has a badge on the tailgate, but badges come off, so we confirm the engine from the under-hood label before any oil goes in.

Mazda Canada's 2024 and 2025 CX-30 schedule repeats the same split, 0W-20 for the non-turbo and 5W-30 for the turbo, which is a useful cross-check for a car that came down from a dealer outside Nevada.

The wrench light, and when to set it aside

Under Mazda's 2024 CX-30 guide the car tracks its own operating conditions and lights a wrench before it reaches 10,000 miles or 12 months since the last service. That is the flexible side of the schedule. The fixed side is the Severe Driving Scheduled Maintenance: oil and filter every 5,000 miles or 6 months, and Mazda says the owner sets the monitor to that interval manually.

Mazda lists three conditions that put a CX-30 on the severe schedule: long idling or low-speed driving, driving mainly on unpaved roads, and driving mainly on mountain or uphill roads. A commuter who lives in the Somersett or Caughlin hills and climbs home every evening, or a Sparks owner who takes the dirt turnoffs off the Pyramid Highway to the trailheads, can read that list and decide which side they are on. The 4,917-foot elevation at our Mae Anne shop (USGS) gives a sense of how much of northwest Reno is uphill.

Filters, transmission and coolant on this model

  • Cabin air filter: replace every 30,000 miles or 24 months on the 2024 U.S. schedule.
  • Engine air filter: replaced on a set visit count, and Mazda tells owners in dusty or sandy areas to clean or replace it more often.
  • Automatic transmission: the 2023 manual lists 8.0 US qt for the 2.5 and 8.5 for the turbo; Mazda schedules an inspection, not a routine drain.
  • Coolant: FL-22 only, first change at 120,000 miles or 10 years, then every 60,000 miles or 5 years.
  • Spark plugs: 40,000 miles on the turbo, 75,000 on the non-turbo.

How a CX-30 goes through our lane

  1. Pull in at any of the four shops; no appointment needed.
  2. We read the engine label and pick 0W-20 or 5W-30, then drain, fit a new filter and refill to the manual's level.
  3. The multi-point check covers both air filters, coolant, brake fluid level, lights, wipers, battery and tire pressure.
  4. We reset the engine oil data, which Mazda says must be done after every change, and set the monitor to the severe interval if you ask.

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

Can I use 0W-20 in a CX-30 Turbo?

Mazda's manual names 5W-30 for the 2.5 Turbo in the U.S. We pour what the manual and the cap call for.

Why did my wrench light come on before 10,000 miles?

The CX-30 calculates oil life from how it is driven, so short trips and idling bring the light on sooner. 10,000 miles or 12 months is only the ceiling.

Do I need to reset the oil reminder myself?

No. Mazda says to reset the engine oil data at every change, and we do it before the car leaves the bay.

Does a CX-30 need a smog check?

A CX-30 registered in the Washoe testing area tests at renewal after its first three registrations, per the Nevada DMV. Both Reno shops test it. Carson City and Douglas County registrations do not need one.
