Mazda MX-5 Miata Oil Change: 0W-20 and the Flexible Setting

The 2023 MX-5 Miata Owner's Manual calls for SAE 0W-20 in the U.S. and lists 4.5 US quarts with the filter. On the Flexible setting the wrench light calls the change with a maximum of 7,500 miles or 12 months; the Fixed setting, which Mazda requires for dusty driving or long idling, changes the oil every 5,000 miles or 6 months.

A car tire on a snow-covered road with a car driving behind it

A Miata spends a Reno summer with the top down and a Reno winter under a cover in the garage. That pattern shapes its oil schedule more than its mileage does, because a car that sits from November to March can hit Mazda's 12-month limit long before the odometer asks for anything. The current fourth-generation car (2016 and newer) uses a 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G four, and Mazda's U.S. manual is short and clear about what it wants.

At a glance

  • SAE 0W-20 for U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico cars (2023 MX-5 Owner's Manual)
  • 4.5 US qt with the filter, 4.3 without
  • Flexible: wrench light, maximum 7,500 miles or 12 months; Fixed: every 5,000 miles or 6 months
  • Severe schedule also replaces the manual transmission oil every 30,000 miles or 2 years

Mazda's two oil settings on a Miata

Mazda's U.S. MX-5 schedule has an Oil Change monitor that the owner sets to Flexible or Fixed. Flexible is offered only when neither of two conditions applies: extended idling or low-speed operation, and driving in dusty conditions. If either applies, Mazda says to follow Fixed maintenance, which replaces the oil and filter every 5,000 miles or 6 months. Either way, the manual says the oil and filter must be changed at least once a year or within 7,500 miles of the last change.

Mazda specifies 0W-20 carrying the API gasoline-engine starburst for North American cars and uses 5W-30 only for other markets, so a U.S. Miata should never leave a bay with the thicker oil.

A summer car at 4,500 feet

Reno averages about 65 days a year at 90 F or hotter (NOAA 1991-2020 normals), and July alone brings around 24 of them. Those are the days a roadster gets driven hard: up the Mount Rose Highway to the summit, down to Incline Village, and back through the curves at full song. Thin air and heat soak are hard on a small engine, and an oil that has sat in the sump since spring has been through all of it.

The garage season matters too. A Miata stored over winter usually comes out in April overdue on time, not miles. We see it most at our Longley Lane shop, a few blocks from the south Reno neighborhoods where people keep their weekend cars.

Gearbox, differential and coolant

On the severe schedule Mazda replaces the manual transmission oil every 30,000 miles or 2 years. The engine coolant is FL-22, first changed at 120,000 miles or 10 years and every 60,000 miles or 5 years after. Spark plugs go 75,000 miles. We check the rear differential for seepage at every visit and point you to a differential service if the level is low.

The Miata visit

  1. Drive in; the car sits low, so we guide it into the lane slowly and keep the front lip clear.
  2. We drain, fit a new filter, refill with 0W-20 to the dipstick and reset the oil data Mazda says must be reset at every change.
  3. Top-down cars collect grit, so the engine air filter and cabin filter come out for a look.
  4. After a winter in storage we test the battery and set the tire pressure, then check the lights and wipers before you go.

What a customer said

Reno Northwest

Smog check. For an extra small amount they submitted the state assessment payment. The technician was very helpful and friendly. Plus it is close to my home. It only took about 15 minutes to complete the tasks.

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

My Miata sat all winter. Does it need an oil change?

If it has been 12 months since the last change, yes. Mazda's manual says at least once a year regardless of mileage.

Should my Miata be on Flexible or Fixed?

Mazda says Fixed if the car is driven in dusty conditions or idles for long periods. Otherwise Flexible is allowed, with a 7,500-mile or 12-month ceiling.

Can you use 5W-30 in a U.S. Miata?

Mazda lists 5W-30 only for cars outside the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. U.S. cars get 0W-20.

Do you change Miata manual transmission oil?

We check it at every visit and can talk through the interval; Mazda's severe schedule replaces it every 30,000 miles or 2 years.
