Mazda6 Oil Change: the 2.5, the 2.5 Turbo and Two Schedules
The 2021 Mazda6 Owner's Manual specifies SAE 0W-20 for the Skyactiv-G 2.5 and SAE 5W-30 for the 2.5 Turbo, with about 4.8 and 5.1 US quarts with the filter. Mazda's Flexible schedule lights the wrench with a maximum of 7,500 miles or 12 months, and the Fixed schedule for dusty driving or long idling changes the oil every 5,000 miles or 6 months.

Mazda sold the third-generation Mazda6 in the U.S. from 2014 through 2021, and plenty of them still make the I-580 run between Carson City and Reno every workday. Earlier cars and the base models carry the 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G four; from 2018 the upper trims added the 2.5 Turbo. The two engines want different oil, and the sedan's schedule gives the owner a choice of how to time the change.
At a glance
- Skyactiv-G 2.5: SAE 0W-20, 4.8 US qt with filter (2021 Mazda6 Owner's Manual)
- Skyactiv-G 2.5T (2018-2021): SAE 5W-30, 5.1 US qt with filter
- Flexible: wrench light, max 7,500 miles or 12 months; Fixed: every 5,000 miles or 6 months
- Severe schedule cabin filter: every 25,000 miles or 2 years

The Mazda6 grades, straight from the manual
For the turbo, Mazda's manual says the 5W-30 needs the API gasoline-engine starburst and ILSAC mark, and that Mazda Genuine 5W-30 is needed for the best fuel economy. The 2.5T's spark plugs are on a shorter clock too: 40,000 miles, against 75,000 for the non-turbo, which is worth knowing when a turbo car starts to stumble on a cold morning.
| Engine | Oil grade (U.S.) | Capacity with filter | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skyactiv-G 2.5 | SAE 0W-20 | 4.8 US qt | 2021 Mazda6 Owner's Manual |
| Skyactiv-G 2.5T (2018-2021) | SAE 5W-30 | 5.1 US qt | 2021 Mazda6 Owner's Manual |
Flexible versus Fixed, in Mazda's terms
The 2021 Mazda6 schedule gives two settings for the Oil Change monitor. On Flexible, the car lights the wrench based on its driving, never later than 12 months or 7,500 miles. Fixed maintenance changes the oil and filter every 5,000 miles or 6 months. Mazda allows Flexible only for cars that avoid extended idling or low-speed operation and do not drive in dusty conditions; if either applies, the manual says to follow Fixed.
Commuters on I-580 and US-395 mostly fit the Flexible description. The cars that do not are the ones that idle in school pickup lines or run the gravel roads out past Mound House and Dayton.
Carson City winters and a sedan
Carson City averages 146 nights a year at or below freezing and about 14 inches of snow (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). A front-drive sedan that starts at 20 F and drives four miles to work never fully warms its oil, and that is the kind of use the wrench light counts against. Our College Parkway shop sees the Mazda6 most often in the weeks after the first hard freeze.
What we check on a Mazda6
- Oil matched to the engine label, new filter, and the engine oil data reset after the change
- Cabin air filter: the Fixed schedule replaces it every 25,000 miles or 2 years
- Engine air filter: Mazda says to clean or replace it more often in very dusty or sandy areas
- Automatic transaxle fluid level and condition; the manual lists 8.5 US qt for the turbo
- FL-22 coolant level, first change at 120,000 miles or 10 years, battery test, lights, wipers and tires

Does a 2019 Mazda6 Turbo take 0W-20?
No. Mazda's manual specifies SAE 5W-30 for the Skyactiv-G 2.5T in the U.S. The non-turbo takes 0W-20.
How do I know which schedule my Mazda6 is on?
The Oil Change setting in the Mazda Connect menu shows Flexible or Fixed. We can tell you which one your driving fits under Mazda's rules.
How much oil does a Mazda6 hold?
About 4.8 US quarts with the filter for the 2.5 and 5.1 for the 2.5T, per the 2021 manual. We fill to the dipstick.
Do you smog Mazda6 sedans?
Yes, at both Reno shops, for cars registered in the Washoe testing area. Carson City registrations are not tested.
