Mitsubishi Oil Changes: Pick the Right Schedule First

Mitsubishi prints two maintenance schedules in each owner's maintenance manual, and the oil interval depends on which one fits your driving: on the 2023 Outlander Sport and Eclipse Cross it is 7,500 miles or 6 months normally and 3,750 miles or 3 months under Schedule 1, while the 2023 gas Outlander lists 10,000 miles or 12 months on both schedules. Current Mitsubishi SUVs list SAE 0W-20, and dusty roads, freezing short trips and towing all put a car on Schedule 1.

Mitsubishi owners around Reno tend to keep their cars a long time, and the Outlander, Outlander Sport and Eclipse Cross we see in the bays usually have a lot of high-desert miles on them. What makes this brand different is the book in the glovebox. Instead of one interval and a footnote, Mitsubishi Motors North America publishes two full schedules and tells you to choose. The choice matters more than the brand of oil, so this page starts there.

At a glance

  • Two schedules: Schedule 1 for severe use, Schedule 2 for everything else (Mitsubishi maintenance manual)
  • 2023 Outlander Sport and Eclipse Cross: oil and filter every 7,500 miles or 6 months, or 3,750 miles or 3 months on Schedule 1
  • 2023 gas Outlander: 10,000 miles or 12 months; change within two weeks or 500 miles once the oil replacement indicator shows
  • 2022 Outlander 2.5-liter: 0W-20, about 5-3/8 quarts with the filter (Mitsubishi service manual table)
  • Cabin filter, CVT fluid and Super Long Life Coolant are on the same books

Schedule 1 or Schedule 2

The 2023 Outlander Sport, Eclipse Cross and Mirage manual sends you to Schedule 1 if you primarily drive on dusty, rough, muddy or salt-spread roads, tow, idle a lot, make repeated short trips at freezing temperatures, use the brakes hard for long stretches, drive in sandy areas, or spend more than half your time in heavy city traffic above 90 F. Everyone else uses Schedule 2.

Read that list with a Northern Nevada eye. Washoe Valley and the Carson Valley have plenty of dirt roads, the Reno airport averages about 122 freezing nights a year and Minden about 188 on the NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals, and the roads over the passes get sanded and salted in winter. Plenty of local Mitsubishis honestly belong on Schedule 1. Our severe service schedule guide walks through the same idea for other makes.

Intervals by model as Mitsubishi prints them

On the 2023 Outlander Sport and Eclipse Cross the oil and filter change is every 7,500 miles or 6 months on Schedule 2 and every 3,750 miles or 3 months on Schedule 1. The plug-in Outlander PHEV manual for 2023 carries the same pair of numbers.

The redesigned gas Outlander that arrived for 2022 works differently. Its 2023 manual lists the oil and filter at 10,000 miles or 12 months on both schedules, and adds that when the oil replacement indicator comes on, the oil and filter should be changed within two weeks or 500 miles. Schedule 1 on that car shortens other items instead, like the cabin filter and the transfer and differential oil for vehicles that tow or run rough roads.

The oil grade on a Mitsubishi cap

Mitsubishi's service manual table for the 2022 Outlander recommends Mitsubishi Motor Oil 0W-20 SN or an equivalent synthetic 0W-20 GF-5 oil, with an approximate fill of 5-3/8 quarts when the filter is changed. Third-party listings such as AutoPadre show 0W-20 for the 2023 and newer Outlander Sport and Eclipse Cross as well, at roughly 4.5 to 4.9 quarts.

Older Mitsubishis, including the 2.0 and 2.4-liter Outlander Sport of the last decade and the V6 Outlander, may list a different grade by year. We go by the cap and the manual, not by a chart on the wall, and fill a full synthetic in that grade.

What Mitsubishi adds beyond oil

  • Cabin filter, which Mitsubishi calls the air purifier filter: on the 2023 Outlander Schedule 1, inspect every 3,750 miles or 3 months and replace every 7,500 miles or 6 months
  • CVT fluid checks, with a change every 30,000 miles if you tow or drive rough roads and skip the dealer inspection (2023 Outlander manual)
  • Super Long Life Coolant Premium, first change at 105,000 to 120,000 miles depending on model
  • Engine air filter, with more frequent changes in dusty conditions
  • Transfer and differential oil on AWD models

Our four service centers are at 6100 Mae Anne Ave and 4993 Longley Ln in Reno, 1861 E College Pkwy in Carson City and 1293 US Hwy 395 N in Gardnerville. No appointment needed. Tell us which schedule you run; if you are not sure, describe your driving and we will point to the line in the book.

We change the oil and filter, reset the reminder, and run the multi-point check: air filter, cabin filter on request, CVT fluid where there is a check point, coolant, brake fluid, belts, lights, wipers, tire pressure and a battery test at participating locations. A cabin air filter swap is quick to add if the one we pull is gray. You decide what gets done.

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

How often should I change the oil in my Mitsubishi?

It depends on the model and the schedule. The 2023 Outlander Sport and Eclipse Cross list 7,500 miles or 6 months normally and 3,750 miles or 3 months under Schedule 1. The 2023 gas Outlander lists 10,000 miles or 12 months.

Which Mitsubishi schedule should I follow in Reno?

Mitsubishi says Schedule 1 if you mainly drive dusty or salted roads, tow, idle a lot or make short trips in freezing weather. A lot of local driving fits that description; the manual's list decides.

Does Mitsubishi use 0W-20?

Current Mitsubishi SUVs list 0W-20. The 2022 Outlander service manual table recommends 0W-20, about 5-3/8 quarts with the filter. Older models can differ, so we check the cap.

Do you service the CVT in a Mitsubishi?

We check it during the maintenance check and offer a transmission fluid service with the fluid type the manual names. Mitsubishi asks for a change every 30,000 miles on the Outlander if it tows or runs rough roads without a dealer inspection.
