Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Oil Change: Know Your Schedule

Mitsubishi's 2023 maintenance manual for the Outlander Sport sets the oil and filter at every 7,500 miles or 6 months on Schedule 2 and every 3,750 miles or 3 months on Schedule 1, the severe schedule. Recent 2.0 and 2.4-liter Outlander Sports are listed at about 4.9 quarts of 0W-20, and we confirm the grade on the oil cap before filling.

The Outlander Sport has been one of the longest-running small crossovers on the market, sold in the US from the 2011 model year with only updates along the way, so the ones we see in Reno and Sparks range from nearly new to well past 150,000 miles. Under the hood is a 2.0-liter four or, on some trims, a 2.4-liter four, paired with a CVT and front or all-wheel drive. It is a simple car to service, and the one decision that changes everything is the schedule its owner picks.

At a glance

  • Schedule 2: oil and filter every 7,500 miles or 6 months (Mitsubishi 2023 maintenance manual)
  • Schedule 1: every 3,750 miles or 3 months
  • 2023-on 2.0L and 2.4L: about 4.9 qt, 0W-20 (AutoPadre listing; confirm in the owner's manual)
  • Cabin filter inspected every 3,750 miles on Schedule 1
  • Coolant first change at 120,000 miles or 96 months

Does your driving put you on Schedule 1?

Mitsubishi's book asks you to use Schedule 1 if you primarily operate the car in any of these ways: on dusty, rough, muddy or salt-spread roads; towing, or police, taxi or commercial use; extensive idling or low-speed driving; repeated short trips at freezing temperatures where the engine never fully warms up; extended braking; driving in sandy areas; or more than half the time in heavy city traffic above 90 F.

Two of those lines read like a map of the Reno area. Sandy roads lead to the beaches at Pyramid Lake and the trails around Moon Rocks, and the Reno airport averages about 65 days a year at 90 F or hotter on the NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals, many of them spent crawling along McCarran Boulevard at rush hour. If either describes your car's life, the 3,750-mile column is the honest one.

Grade and capacity

Third-party capacity listings such as AutoPadre show about 4.9 quarts with the filter for the 2023 and newer Outlander Sport, 0W-20 for the 2.0-liter and 0W-20 or 5W-20 for the 2.4-liter. Older cars from the early 2010s may list a different grade by year, and the oil filler cap and owner's manual are the final word.

We read the cap, use a full synthetic in that grade, and check the level on the dipstick after the engine has run. If you have been using a heavier oil because a previous shop recommended it, bring the manual and we will go by what Mitsubishi prints.

Filters and wildfire smoke

On Schedule 1 the 2023 manual has the cabin filter, which Mitsubishi calls the air purifier filter, inspected for clogging every 3,750 miles or 3 months and replaced on a regular schedule. The engine air cleaner filter is on the same book. Reno averages only about 7.35 inches of precipitation a year, so dust stays in the air, and smoke from summer fires can hang over the Truckee Meadows for weeks.

We pull the cabin filter on request and show it to you next to a new one. The wildfire smoke season page explains what that filter does for the air you breathe inside the car.

CVT and coolant notes

Every Outlander Sport of this era uses a CVT, and Mitsubishi's book checks the transaxle fluid level and condition on Schedule 1 and changes it on an interval. CVTs care about fluid type, so we match the fluid the manual names when you ask for a transmission fluid service.

Coolant gets its first change at 120,000 miles or 96 months, then every 90,000 miles or 72 months, per the 2023 manual. We check the level and condition at every visit.

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

How often should I change the oil in an Outlander Sport?

Every 7,500 miles or 6 months on Mitsubishi's Schedule 2, or every 3,750 miles or 3 months on Schedule 1, per the 2023 maintenance manual.

What oil does an Outlander Sport use?

Recent models are listed at 0W-20, about 4.9 quarts with the filter. The 2.4-liter also lists 5W-20 on some years. We go by your oil cap.

I drive to Pyramid Lake a lot. Does that matter?

Yes. Mitsubishi lists driving in sandy areas and on dusty roads as Schedule 1 conditions.

Do you check the CVT fluid?

We check what can be checked during the maintenance check and offer a fluid service with the type Mitsubishi specifies.

Is an Outlander Sport due for a smog check in Reno?

If it is registered in the Washoe testing area and past its first three registrations, yes, per the Nevada DMV. Both Reno shops test it.
