Toyota Sequoia Oil Change: i-FORCE MAX Hybrid Facts

The 2023-on Sequoia's i-FORCE MAX twin-turbo hybrid V6 takes SAE 0W-20 with 7.7 quarts including the filter, per Toyota's 2024 Sequoia Hybrid Owner's Manual. Toyota's 2025 Sequoia maintenance guide replaces oil and filter every 10,000 miles or 12 months, and every 5,000 miles or six months when the vehicle mostly sees dirt or dusty roads.

The current Sequoia is a big, heavy hybrid that tows, and the maintenance book reflects all three. Toyota built it on the Tundra's platform for 2023 and made the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain standard, so every new Sequoia has a twin-turbo V6, an electric motor in the transmission and a battery pack. Older Sequoias from 2008 to 2022 ran the 5.7-liter V8. Here is what Toyota publishes for the hybrid, and how we handle both generations.

At a glance

  • 2023-on i-FORCE MAX: SAE 0W-20, 7.7 qt with the filter (2024 Sequoia Hybrid Owner's Manual)
  • Toyota Genuine ATF WS, about 12.4 qt in the automatic
  • Separate intercooler coolant loop listed at 4.6 qt
  • Toyota's 2025 guide: check the HEV battery cooling intake filter every 5,000 miles

Grade, capacity and the transmission

Toyota's 2024 Sequoia Hybrid Owner's Manual specifies SAE 0W-20, with 5W-20 allowed only until the next change, and a lubrication system capacity of 7.7 quarts with the filter and 7.4 without. The 10-speed automatic takes Toyota Genuine ATF WS, with about 12.4 quarts in the system, and the rear differential holds about 5.8 to 6.0 quarts depending on whether the truck has the locking differential.

For the older V8 Sequoia we follow its own cap and manual, which also list 0W-20 on later years. Either way, we fill to the book and then check the dipstick.

Toyota's hybrid schedule for this SUV

The 2025 Sequoia Hybrid maintenance guide changes the oil and filter at 10,000 miles or 12 months and moves the change to 5,000 miles or six months for vehicles mainly driven on dirt or dusty roads. It also tells owners to visually check the HEV battery cooling intake filter for dirt or dust every 5,000 miles and clean it if necessary, which is something we look at during every visit.

Coolant follows Toyota's long-life schedule, with the first engine and intercooler coolant replacement at 100,000 miles or 120 months and every 50,000 miles or 60 months after that, per the guide.

Towing, altitude and summer heat

Sequoias here pull travel trailers and boats, often over the Mount Rose Highway or up US-395 in July. Reno averages about 65 days a year at 90 F or hotter on the NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals, and the service centers themselves sit between about 4,400 and 4,900 feet per USGS elevation data. Hot air is thin air, and a twin-turbo engine pulling a trailer works its intercooler loop hard.

The guide's special-condition items for towing, car-top carriers and heavy loading bring more fluids into the replacement schedule. We check the intercooler and engine coolant reservoirs, ATF condition where the design allows, and differential levels, and we can do a transmission fluid service or differential service on the same stop.

What we check every time

  • Oil to the manual's capacity, new filter, reminder reset
  • HEV battery cooling intake filter, per Toyota's 5,000-mile check
  • Engine and intercooler coolant levels
  • Differential and transfer case levels
  • 12-volt battery test, belts, lights, wipers, tire pressure and both air filters
