A/C service for Mound House drivers: College Parkway, 8 minutes

Mound House is about 8 minutes from our Carson City service center at 1861 E College Pkwy by US-50, and an A/C service there means reading the system pressures before any refrigerant goes in. Low systems that hold get recharged; leaks and failed parts get a straight referral to an A/C repair shop.

The Carson City service center seen from College Parkway
Carson City, College Parkway

US-50 between Dayton and Carson City is a working road: gravel trucks, contractors and commuters headed for the Carson side of the hill. Mound House is right on it, in Lyon County, and the Census has no 2024 place row for the community, so the county numbers stand in: 2.29 vehicles per household, 75 percent owning two or more, and a 29.4-minute mean commute (Census ACS 5-year 2024). Most of those vehicles see a lot of dust.

Dust, condensers and warm air

A pickup that runs gravel roads off US-50 collects dust in the condenser fins at the front of the radiator. When those fins are packed, the system cannot shed heat, high-side pressure climbs, and the vents blow warm even with a full charge. That is why we look at the condenser before deciding anything. Sometimes the answer is cleaning the fins, not adding refrigerant.

The service at College Parkway

  1. Pull in off US-50 and Airport Road; no appointment.
  2. We read the refrigerant label under the hood and the charge weight.
  3. Gauges on both ports, engine running, A/C on maximum.
  4. Pressures and vent temperature recorded; condenser, belt, clutch and fittings inspected.
  5. If low and holding, we recharge to the label weight.
  6. If leaking or a part has failed, we recommend an A/C repair shop.

R-134a or R-1234yf

Older trucks and cars mostly carry R-134a. Most newer vehicles use R-1234yf, which the EPA lists as the lower global-warming refrigerant. The fittings are different on purpose, and we have the equipment for both. We fill to the label weight because too much refrigerant hurts cooling as much as too little.

Eight minutes, and no smog test

From Mound House, follow US-50 west into Carson City, turn north on Airport Road and west on College Parkway to the service center, about 8 minutes and 5.3 miles by OSRM. The Carson City NOAA station averages 39.5 days a year at 90 F or hotter and an 86.1 F June-to-August high (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). Lyon County vehicles do not need a smog check for registration. Hours are Monday through Friday 8 to 5 and Saturday 8 to 4, closed Sunday; (775) 883-5823. Add an oil change to the same stop.

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

Can a dirty condenser make the A/C blow warm?

Yes. It traps heat in the system. We look at it during every A/C check.

Does Lyon County require a smog check?

No. Lyon County is not a Nevada emissions-testing area for registration.

Do you do A/C repairs?

No. We test, recharge when it helps, and refer repairs to an A/C repair shop.
