Cabin air filter for Mound House drivers: College Parkway, 8 minutes
Mound House is a working stretch of US-50 between Carson City and Dayton, lined with gravel yards, industrial lots and bare hills, and its cabin filters fill with dust and truck soot. Replace the filter about every 12,000 to 15,000 miles and sooner in dust and smoke (Car Care Council); our College Parkway service center is about 8 minutes west.
Most people know Mound House as the place where US-50 crosses from Carson City into Lyon County, and as the turnoff up the hill toward Virginia City. It is a place of contractors' yards, trucks and unpaved side roads, set in dry, rocky hills. Census does not publish a 2024 row for the Mound House CDP, but Lyon County households average 2.29 vehicles and a 29.4-minute commute (Census ACS 5-year 2024), and that pattern fits here.
What a Mound House filter looks like when it comes out
Two textures, usually. Coarse tan grit from the gravel lots and dirt roads, packed into the bottom of the pleats. And a darker gray haze from diesel exhaust on US-50, where heavy trucks run between Carson City, Dayton and the industrial parks. Wildfire smoke adds a third layer in late summer. When we hold that filter next to a new one, the difference is obvious, and that is the point: you see it and decide.
Where it sits and what it does
The cabin air filter is a pleated panel in the fresh-air intake of the heater and air conditioner. On most pickups, SUVs and cars it is behind the glove box. It cleans the air the fan pushes into the cab, so a loaded filter means weaker airflow, slower defrost on cold mornings and dust on the dash. It has nothing to do with the engine, which has its own air filter that we also check.
The interval
The Car Care Council recommends replacing it about every 12,000 to 15,000 miles and sooner under dusty or smoky conditions. Truck owner's manuals often print a severe or dusty schedule with a shorter figure. For a work truck that lives on gravel, we would check it at every oil change.
West on US-50 to College Parkway
OpenStreetMap routing puts 1861 E College Pkwy about 8 minutes and 5.3 miles from Mound House, west on US-50 and onto College Parkway. No appointment, service while you wait.
Ask for the cabin filter at the window. If you run a few trucks for a business, our fleet service keeps the records together. Lyon County does not require a smog check for registration (Nevada DMV), so this trip is just the filter and, if it is due, the oil change. College Parkway is open Monday through Friday 8 to 5 and Saturday 8 to 4, (775) 883-5823.
