Carson City, an open bay

Mound House is the first Lyon County community east of Carson City on US-50, a stretch of industrial lots, truck yards and homes on the flats below the Flowery Range. The Census Bureau retired its separate place row in the 2024 ACS release, so the nearest published numbers are the 89706 ZIP that the Carson service center shares with north Carson, at 20,478 residents and 1.88 vehicles per household, and Lyon County as a whole, where households average 2.29 vehicles, 75 percent own two or more, the median household income is $80,812 and the commute runs 29.4 minutes. Most of that Lyon County commute is US-50 into Carson, and the College Parkway exit is on it.

US-50 west and the first exit

From Mound House, take US-50 west toward Carson City. Where the highway meets the I-580 freeway, go north one exit to College Parkway and turn west; the service center is on the north side past the Goni Road light. Or stay on US-50 to Fairview Drive, north on Fairview as it becomes Roop Street, and east on College Parkway. OSRM puts it at 8 minutes free-flow and 5.3 miles.

The Carson service center is open Monday to Friday 8 to 5 and Saturday 8 to 4, closed Sunday. The trip is short enough that it fits inside a Carson errand run, and the bay works in arrival order with no appointment.

Lyon County: no smog check

Lyon County is not an emissions county. The Nevada DMV requires smog checks only in the urban parts of Washoe and Clark counties, so a vehicle registered in Mound House, Dayton or anywhere else in Lyon County renews its registration without a test (DMV emission program page, read 10/15/26). If you just moved from Reno and the plates still carry a Washoe address, the yearly test applies until the address changes, and our two Reno service centers do it.

The Nevada smog check page lists which counties test and which do not, and the moving-to-Nevada checklist covers the registration steps for a Lyon County address.

Work trucks on a dusty flat

Mound House is industrial. Service trucks, flatbeds and vans come out of the yards along US-50 every morning, and they come back with dust from the flats and the gravel pits in every filter. The Carson station's NOAA normals show 9.34 inches of precipitation a year, which is not enough to keep that dust down. An engine air filter checked at every oil change is the cheapest thing a work truck can have, and the fleet program keeps a company's trucks on one schedule with records per vehicle.

AAA's guidance that many modern engines on synthetic go 5,000 to 7,500 miles comes with the owner's manual setting the number, and a truck that idles, hauls and runs dusty roads is on the manual's severe-service interval. For the diesel pickups and vans, the diesel oil change uses the grade and capacity the maker calls for.

  • Lyon County households average 2.29 vehicles and 75 percent own two or more (ACS 2020-2024)
  • Carson City records 146 freezing nights a year (NOAA normals), so the battery check matters from October
  • Differential and transfer case fluids are checked on request for trucks that tow

Reviews and the reason to stop on the way through

Google rates the College Parkway service center 4.6 stars across 319 reviews as of 10/15/26, and the reviews say quick and honest. In the bay that means we hold up the filter, show you the dipstick and the fluid colors, and tell you what can wait until the next trip through. You decide.

If the truck is already on US-50 headed into Carson, the stop costs a few minutes and the oil sticker stops being a worry. Come by this week.
