Coolant flush for East Sparks and Vista drivers: Longley Lane, 27 minutes

From the east end of Sparks, a lot of daily driving points the other way, out I-80 toward the industrial parks in the Truckee River canyon and beyond. That is steady highway work with a climb or two, and the trucks that make it often carry tools, trailers or a full crew. Pulling a load at highway speed through the canyon east of Sparks keeps the engine at high output for long stretches, and in summer the air coming through the radiator is already hot. Is the drive worth it?

East Sparks is inside the Washoe County smog testing area, and Longley Lane does smog checks, so the annual test, an oil change and the coolant can all happen in one stop. Coolant families and intervals

AAA sorts coolant into IAT, the old green type, at about two years or 24,000 miles; OAT, common in GM vehicles, at about five years or 50,000 miles; and HOAT, common in Ford and Chrysler vehicles, at about five years or 50,000 miles with some automakers rating it to ten years or 150,000. Mixing types can cause sludge, and color does not tell them apart, so we go by the book.
