Income and vehicle ownership by area

Across the places we serve, higher household income goes with more vehicles only up to a point: Mogul households earn a median of $145,250 and average 2.85 vehicles, while Incline Village earns $167,069 and averages 1.91 (ACS 2020-2024). Distance from town, lot size and housing type predict car count at least as well as income does.

Car ownership drives what a quick lube sees in its bays: how many vehicles a household brings in, how many are trucks, how many are older. We compared median household income with vehicles per household from the Census Bureau's American Community Survey 5-year estimates for 2020-2024, for the counties, towns and ZIP areas around our four service centers. The generated table below lists every area; the text pulls out the patterns. Estimates for small places carry wide margins of error, so we round in the prose.

Where income and car count line up

On the edges of the Truckee Meadows, more money and more vehicles go together. Mogul, west of Reno off I-80, has a median household income of $145,250 and 2.85 vehicles per household (ACS 2020-2024). North Spanish Springs (89441) reports $131,616 and 2.72, and Washoe Valley (89704) $118,017 and 2.87. These are large-lot neighborhoods several miles from shopping and jobs, where nearly every adult drives and a pickup or a trailer often sits next to the family car.

Carson Valley follows the same pattern. Johnson Lane reports a median of $121,458 with 2.42 vehicles per household, and Genoa $121,981 with 2.41 (ACS 2020-2024). Gardnerville Ranchos, at a median of $87,785, still averages 2.29 (ACS 2020-2024).

Where they do not

Incline Village has the highest median income in our data, $167,069, but only 1.91 vehicles per household (ACS 2020-2024). Caughlin Ranch in southwest Reno (89519) reports $155,288 and 2.22. Both have plenty of income and fewer vehicles than the outlying towns, likely because many households are smaller, older or part-time, and more people work from home. Incline Village's share of workers who work from home is about 42 percent by our calculation from the same survey.

At the other end, central Reno shows how much housing type matters. The Midtown and downtown ZIP (89501) averages 0.78 vehicles per household, and about 41 percent of households there have no vehicle at all (ACS 2020-2024). The University and North Reno ZIP (89512) averages 1.5 vehicles, with about 19 percent car-free. Apartments, students and short distances shrink the driveway.

  • Washoe County: $88,096 median income, 1.96 vehicles per household (ACS 2020-2024)
  • Douglas County: $90,754, 2.25 vehicles
  • Carson City: $72,355, 1.97 vehicles
  • Lyon County: $80,812, 2.29 vehicles
  • Nevada: $78,260, 1.84 vehicles

The county picture

Douglas and Lyon counties both own more vehicles per household than Washoe even though Lyon's median income is lower. Lyon households average 2.29 vehicles on $80,812, and 75.0 percent own two or more (ACS 2020-2024). Long commutes are part of the reason: Lyon County's mean travel time to work is 29.4 minutes, against 22.5 in Washoe. When the job is in Reno or Carson City and the home is in Dayton or Fernley, every working adult needs a car.

Carson City is the clearest case of income and car count moving apart. Its median household income is below the state's, yet its 1.97 vehicles per household is above Nevada's 1.84 (ACS 2020-2024).

Why a lube shop cares

More vehicles per household means more oil changes per household, and more of them on pickups, SUVs and work trucks that take bigger oil loads and need differential and transfer case service. It also means more vehicles that sit between uses, where the months interval in the owner's manual matters more than the miles. Our My Garage page keeps several vehicles on one screen with each one's next-due date.

Whatever is in your driveway, the four service centers take it without an appointment. See the two-or-more vehicles page and the vehicles per household page for the related data.

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

Which area near your service centers has the most vehicles per household?

Mogul, at 2.85, with Washoe Valley (89704) at 2.87 among ZIP areas (ACS 2020-2024). Both are large-lot areas outside central Reno.

Why does Incline Village have fewer cars despite high income?

Smaller and part-time households and a high share of people working from home. The survey shows 1.91 vehicles per household there (ACS 2020-2024).

How reliable are the small-place numbers?

ACS 5-year estimates for places under about 5,000 people carry wide margins of error, so treat them as approximate.

Where does the data come from?

The Census Bureau's American Community Survey 5-year estimates for 2020-2024, pulled October 15, 2026.
