Longley Lane checks the cabin air filter on request and replaces it in the bay when it is loaded with dust, pollen or smoke residue. The Car Care Council suggests about every 12,000 to 15,000 miles; a south Reno summer with a smoke event can use one up faster.
Reno South, Longley Lane, the original Xpress Lube sign
The defroster takes forever on a cold morning. The fan is on high and the air barely moves. The car smells like a campfire a week after the smoke cleared. All three point at the cabin air filter, the one part of the car that is there for the people in it rather than the engine. At our Longley Lane service center it is checked when you ask and swapped in the same visit as an oil change, and the old one is shown to you first.
Timing it to the Reno calendar
The Car Care Council's general figure is 12,000 to 15,000 miles, and many manuals say 12 months. The south Reno calendar is more useful: have it looked at after wildfire smoke season in September or October, when the filter has caught weeks of ash, and again in spring after the cottonwood and sagebrush pollen. The airport station's roughly 7.4 inches of rain a year (NOAA 1991-2020 normals) means the dust from the Longley Lane industrial corridor and the Damonte Ranch construction never really settles. A filter that is not checked for two years in this climate is doing nothing.
Engine filter and cabin filter are not the same part
Customers often say air filter and mean one or the other. The engine air filter lives in the airbox under the hood and protects the engine; the cabin filter lives behind the glove box or under the cowl and protects your lungs. They clog at different rates and are checked separately; the cabin versus engine air filter page has the details. Ask for both when you pull in for a full-service oil change, especially after a smoke event.
What the swap involves
On most vehicles the technician drops the glove box, slides the old filter out and holds it up: gray, matted and smelling of smoke means it is spent; a clean pleat goes back in and you hear that. A new filter sized for the make and model goes in with the airflow arrow pointing the right way. Where a vehicle offers a carbon-type filter that cuts odors as well as particles, you can choose it. Fleet vans with drivers in them all day are good candidates for the carbon type. If the smell persists with a new filter, the evaporator box may need cleaning, which is a repair-shop job, and musty smell from the vents explains how to tell.
Where we are and when
4993 Longley Ln is off Mill Street by the airport and I-580, beside the Sierra Express Car Wash, at about 4,400 feet (USGS 3DEP). Hours are Monday to Friday 8 to 5 and Saturday 8 to 3, no appointment. South Reno is about 5 minutes away, the airport area and Hidden Valley about 8, Damonte Ranch about 9, Sparks and Midtown about 10, Old Southwest about 11 (OSRM free-flow drive times, 2026). If the vents have been weak since summer, drive in and ask to see the filter; see wildfire smoke and your cabin filter for what the ash does to it.

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.
Is the cabin filter part of the regular check?
It is checked on request with the multi-point check. Say the word when you pull in and the technician pulls it.
Will a new cabin filter make the A/C colder?
It restores airflow, which feels like better cooling, but it does not change refrigerant charge. If the air is warm, see the A/C service page for Longley Lane.
Does my truck have one?
Most trucks since the mid-2000s do; some older and base-model trucks do not. We check the make and model.
