Oil change for Lemmon Valley drivers, 20 minutes away at Reno Northwest (Mae Anne Avenue)
Lemmon Valley is about 20 minutes and 11 miles from our Mae Anne Avenue service center by Lemmon Drive, US-395 and North McCarran (OSRM routing, 10/15/26). The full-service oil change includes the oil, a new filter, chassis lube, the light reset and a multi-point check, and in Lemmon Valley the part of that check we pay closest attention to is the engine air filter.
Dust is the Lemmon Valley story. The dirt roads off Lemmon Drive, the dry lakebed, the wind that comes down the valley in the afternoon: all of it ends up on the pleats of an air filter and, eventually, in the oil. With 85.2 percent of households owning two or more vehicles (Census ACS 5-year 2024), there is usually one truck in the driveway that lives on those roads. This page is about what that does to an engine and how we handle it.
Dust, filters and why they matter for the oil
An engine air filter is the only thing between the valley's dust and the cylinders. When it clogs, the engine pulls harder for the same air and runs rich; when it is damaged or seated wrong, grit gets past it, scores cylinder walls and ends up suspended in the oil as an abrasive. That is why dusty roads are on every manufacturer's severe-service list and why we pull the filter and show it to you at every visit instead of ticking a box. Reno's high-desert climate, with about 7.4 inches of precipitation a year at the airport (NOAA 1991-2020 normals), means there is rarely enough rain to settle the dust for long.
The cabin air filter takes the same beating and is checked on request. If you have noticed the vents smelling of dust or the fan sounding like it is working harder, ask.
The drive from Lemmon Valley
Lemmon Drive to US-395 south, exit at North McCarran, head west, and turn onto Mae Anne Avenue; the service center is at 6100 Mae Anne Ave. OSRM free-flow routing calls it about 20 minutes and 11 miles. The Longley Lane service center in south Reno is about 19 minutes by US-395 straight through town, so pick the one closer to work. The mean commute from Lemmon Valley is 30.3 minutes (Census ACS 2024), so either service center is shorter than the trip most residents make every weekday.
Intervals for a valley truck versus a commuter car
AAA's guidance is that many modern engines on synthetic oil go 5,000 to 7,500 miles between changes, with the owner's manual setting the number and severe service shortening it. A commuter car that lives on US-395 can usually follow the manual's normal interval. A truck that runs the dirt roads, tows a trailer or idles on a job site should follow the severe interval, and the air filter on that truck may need replacing well before the next oil change. We check the manual for your vehicle and write the sticker to the schedule that fits.

Hours, phone and the smog check
Mae Anne Avenue is open Monday through Friday 8 to 5 and Saturday 8 to 4, closed Sunday; the phone is (775) 787-1000. Lemmon Valley is inside the Washoe County emissions-testing area, so a vehicle registered there needs an annual smog check once it is past its first three registrations, with a passing result valid for 90 days (Nevada DMV). We test at this service center, and the Lemmon Valley smog check page covers the details. Doing both in one visit is the reason to make the drive today rather than twice next month.

How often should the air filter be replaced on a dirt-road truck?
