Downtown Reno is the one place on our map where most households do not own a car at all. The 89501 ZIP Code Tabulation Area counts 3,507 residents in 2,331 households with 0.78 vehicles per household, and only 14.1 percent of those households keep two or more vehicles in the ACS 2020-2024 estimates. The median household income is $33,963 and only 43.1 percent of workers drive alone. The car that does exist in a downtown or Midtown household is usually the only one, often older, often parked on the street, and it does all the work. For that car, a service center ten minutes down Virginia Street that does the job while you wait and explains what it found is the difference between a small bill now and a tow later.

The only car in the household
A single older car with no backup needs the boring things done on time: oil, filter, coolant level, a battery that cranks, wipers that clear. AAA's guidance that many modern engines on synthetic go 5,000 to 7,500 miles comes with the owner's manual setting the number, and for an older car on conventional oil the manual's number is shorter. We follow the manual, offer the conventional oil change when that is what the car calls for, and run the multi-point check at every visit so a slow leak or a soft battery shows up before it strands you.
Street-parked cars in Reno face 65 days a year at 90 F or hotter and 122 freezing nights per the NOAA normals for the airport. Sun hardens wiper rubber and cold kills marginal batteries. The battery check and wiper blades are the two cheapest things we look at and the two that most often save a bad morning.
Smog checks downtown
Downtown and Midtown are inside the Washoe County emissions testing area, so a gasoline vehicle registered in 89501 needs a yearly smog check once it is on its fourth registration; a hybrid is exempt for its first five model years, and a pass is valid 90 days (Nevada DMV emission program page, read 10/15/26). The result is transmitted to the DMV electronically.
Older cars fail more often, and the usual reason is a check engine light. Tell us before the test. Our guide on what to do after a failed smog check explains the retest and the waiver process so the registration does not lapse.
Down Virginia Street to Longley Lane
From Midtown, take South Virginia Street south past the Peppermill and Meadowood, turn left on Peckham Lane or McCarran, and come across to Longley Lane. From downtown, I-580 south to the Plumb Lane exit, east to Rock Boulevard, south on Rock as it becomes Longley Lane; the service center is on the right beside the Sierra Express Car Wash. Both routes run about 10 minutes free-flow by OSRM. The Mae Anne Avenue service center is about 13 minutes north by Keystone and McCarran if that direction suits you better.
Commutes in 89501 average 24.5 minutes (ACS 2020-2024), which is longer than the neighborhoods around it, partly because a share of downtown workers ride the bus. The Longley service center is on the RTC route along Rock Boulevard if you want to drop the car and walk to the Meadowood stores.
Hours, reviews and the one reason to come today
Longley Lane is open Monday through Friday 8 to 5 and Saturday 8 to 3, closed Sunday. Google rates it 4.8 stars across 339 reviews as of 10/15/26, the highest of our four service centers, and the reviews lean on the words quick and honest. We show you the filter, the dipstick and the fluid colors; what gets done is your call.
The reason to come today is the one that applies to every single-car household: the oil change you do on time is the cheapest thing that will happen to that car all year. Check the coupons page before you leave the house.

Questions from Midtown and Downtown Reno
Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.
How do I get to Longley Lane from Midtown without the freeway?
South Virginia Street to Peckham Lane or McCarran, then across to Longley Lane. About 10 minutes free-flow by OSRM routing.
Does a downtown Reno vehicle need a smog check?
Yes, once a gasoline vehicle is on its fourth registration. The Nevada DMV places all of Reno in the Washoe testing area. Both Reno service centers test and send the result to the DMV.
My car is old and I am not sure it will pass. Should I still come?
Come, and tell us about any warning light first. If the check engine light is on we will explain what it means for the test before you pay for one. The oil change is worth doing either way.
Can I leave the car and take the bus?
Service is quick enough that most people wait, but RTC serves Rock Boulevard near the service center if you would rather run an errand. Call the service center with the car's details when you drop it.
