Audi A6 Oil Change: 2.0 TFSI, 3.0 TFSI and the Oil Standard

Reno sits at about 4,500 feet, and our Mae Anne Avenue service center is closer to 4,900. A turbocharged or supercharged engine like the A6's makes up for thin air by working its boost harder, and that heat goes into the oil. That is one reason Audi is precise about which oil standard each A6 engine gets. Two generations matter here: the C7 (2012 to 2018) and the C8 that arrived for 2019.

The same chart lists the quattro eight-speed Tiptronic with a new fill of 8.6 liters and a refill of 3.6 to 4.0 liters, a front final drive, a transfer case at about 0.85 liters on refill, and a rear final drive. It calls for Audi's G13 coolant additive. Those are the units we look at underneath.

The C8 and VW 508 00

For the 2019 and newer A6, Pure Tyre's Audi table and the parts listings for the 45 TFSI mild hybrid point to VW 508 00, the 0W-20 standard Fuchs describes as written for the newest VW Group engines. Carscounsel lists about 5.5 quarts with the filter on the 45 TFSI and about 8 quarts on the 55 TFSI V6. Where sources disagree on the V6, we go by the manual and the sticker on your car.

A 508 00 oil and a 502 00 oil are different products, and Audi does not treat them as substitutes. If your C8 lists 508 00, that is all we pour.

Audi's interval, in Audi's words

The Audi Care brochure from Audi of America puts it simply: a maintenance service every 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever occurs first. The A6's driver display shows days and miles to the next oil change, and we reset it when the service is done. An A6 that commutes daily to Carson City on I-580 tends to reach the miles first. One that mostly sits in a garage in Caughlin Ranch reaches the months first.

Altitude, heat and the turbo

Reno also averages about 65 days a year at 90 F or hotter (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). Thin air and summer heat together load an A6's cooling system and turbocharger, so on every visit we check the coolant level, look for oil seepage around the turbo and valve cover areas, and tell you what we see. An A6 visit, in order

1. Drive in at any of our four service centers; no appointment needed.
2. Engine code and Audi oil standard confirmed on the sticker and in the manual.
3. Old oil out, new filter in, approved full synthetic to the right level.
4. Engine air filter and the dust and pollen filter shown; tires, lights, wipers and the battery (participating locations) checked; quattro units looked at for leaks.
5. Service display reset and a plain summary.
