Audi Q3 Oil Change: Two Generations, Two Oil Standards

Audi recommends a maintenance service every 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever occurs first, and the Q3's service indicator counts down to it. The 2015 Q3's 2.0 TFSI was listed by Audi of America at 4.6 liters with a VW 502 00 synthetic, while the 2019 and newer Q3 is commonly listed with a 0W-20 approved to VW 508 00 and about 5.7 liters.

An open two-lane highway across high desert range land

The Q3 is a popular small Audi in the Carson Valley, partly because nearly every one sold here is a quattro and the valley gets real winters. Minden's weather station logs about 188 nights a year at or below freezing (NOAA 1991-2020 normals), the most of any station near our service centers. That cold is why the oil standard printed in a Q3's manual is worth reading closely. The Q3 changed its oil standard when it changed generations.

From VW 502 00 to VW 508 00

Audi of America's 2015 Q3 fluid capacity chart lists the 200-horsepower 2.0-liter TFSI at about 4.6 liters (4.9 quarts) with a filter change, Audi oil spec VW 502 00, synthetic in SAE 5W-40, 5W-30 or 0W-40. That covers the first-generation Q3 sold here from 2015 to 2018.

The second-generation Q3 arrived for 2019. Pure Tyre's Audi table lists VW 508 00 and about 5.7 liters for the MY2019-20 45 TFSI, and Fuchs describes VW 508 00 and 509 00 as 0W-20 standards for the newest VW Group engines. A 508 00 oil is a different product from a 502 00 oil, not a thinner version of it. We read the sticker under the hood and the manual and pour the standard printed there.

Audi's 10,000 miles or 12 months

The Audi Care brochure from Audi of America states the rhythm as a maintenance service every 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever occurs first. The Q3's instrument cluster shows the days and miles to the next oil change service, and on a Q3 that does mostly short trips from Gardnerville Ranchos to Minden, the 12 months often arrive before the mileage does. We reset the oil service display when we are done.

Quattro, the Haldex clutch and the Tiptronic

The 2015 Q3 chart shows how the quattro hardware is laid out: a bevel box at the front with about 0.9 liters of oil, a rear final drive with about 0.95 liters, and a Haldex clutch with its own fluid, listed at 0.7 liters for a change. The six-speed Tiptronic is listed separately. Those units are the parts that work hardest on a snowy Kingsbury Grade trip, so we look at each for seepage.

If you want a fluid change on one of them, our AWD fluid guide explains how we decide with you, using Audi's maintenance information.

Valley dust and the Q3's filters

Minden gets about 9.3 inches of precipitation a year, and the dirt roads and fields on the valley floor dry out by June. Fine dust finds the Q3's engine air filter first. Audi's cabin dust and pollen filter catches the rest, along with wildfire smoke in late summer. We pull both and show them to you before anything is replaced.

Coolant and what we check

  • Coolant level checked; Audi's 2015 chart calls for its G13 coolant additive, and we never top off with a mismatched type.
  • New oil filter, approved full synthetic to the standard on your sticker, level confirmed on the dipstick or the electronic gauge.
  • Brake fluid level, tires, lights and wipers checked; battery tested at participating locations, which matters before a Carson Valley winter.
  • Oil service display reset and a short summary of what we saw.
