BMW 5 Series Oil Change: 530i, 540i and the V8s

A 5 Series is due when Condition Based Service shows the engine oil service, and BMW's 2013 bulletin puts that on a 12-month basis for cars built from July 1, 2013 on. The approval depends on the engine: the 2011 to 2016 F10's N20 and N55 typically list Longlife-01, the G30's B46 and B58 list 0W-20 Longlife approvals, and the 2024 and newer 530i is listed with a 0W-12 oil, which BMW covers with its LL-22 FE++ standard.

A parent and a teenager checking the oil dipstick together

Plenty of 5 Series sedans in Northern Nevada spend their lives on I-580 between Carson City and Reno, and a few do the Mount Rose Highway to Incline every weekday. That is steady, warm highway work, the easiest duty a BMW engine sees. The complication is not the driving. It is that the 5 Series has carried more engine families in the last fifteen years than almost any car we service, and each family has its own oil approval and sump size.

Which 5 Series engine is under the hood

The capacity figures come from AutoPadre's 530i and 540i lookups, and an AMSOIL lookup lists the same 6.9 quarts for the 2018 540i. Both sources say to check the manual, which is our rule as well.

LL-22 FE++ and the thinner oils

BMW keeps adding Longlife standards as its engines get tighter. OilSpecifications.org describes LL-22 FE++ as a 0W-12 standard approved only for selected BMW gasoline engines from model year 2022, and BimmerWorld's listing for the genuine BMW 0W-12 says it is intended for 2023 and newer B48 and B58 hybrid engines. A newer 530i that lists 0W-12 should get 0W-12 with that approval. An F10 535i that lists Longlife-01 should not.

That is why we read the cap, the manual and the approval list on every 5 Series. If your car lists something we do not have on the shelf that day, we tell you before we start, not after.

The CBS display and the calendar

BMW's Condition Based Service shows a countdown for the engine oil service and separate items for brake fluid, the vehicle check and the microfilter. The November 2013 bulletin from BMW of North America sets the oil service on a 12-month basis for vehicles produced on or after July 1, 2013, with a 48-month basis for the vehicle check. A 5 Series doing 18,000 highway miles a year will usually hit the CBS mileage first. A weekend car will hit the year first.

I-580 heat, the V8 and the plug-in

Reno averages about 65 days a year at 90 F or hotter (NOAA 1991-2020 normals), and a turbocharged V8 like the N63 runs hot under the hood in that kind of July. Those cars deserve a look at the coolant level, the hoses we can see and any oil weeping around the valve covers at each visit. The 530e plug-in is the opposite case: its engine may sit off for days, so CBS still relies on the calendar to protect oil that ages without miles.

The eight-speed automatic and the xDrive transfer case use BMW-specific fluids that BMW treats as long-life. We check for leaks and follow BMW's maintenance information. See our transmission fluid service page for how we handle a request.

A 5 Series visit, start to finish

  • Drive in at any of our four service centers; no appointment needed.
  • Approval confirmed on the cap and in the manual, new filter cartridge and O-rings, full synthetic with the listed Longlife approval.
  • Level confirmed on the electronic oil gauge, since most G30 and G60 cars have no dipstick.
  • Engine air filter and cabin microfilter shown to you; tires, lights, wipers and the battery (participating locations) checked.
  • CBS oil service reset and a short note of anything worth watching.

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

What oil does a 2019 BMW 540i take?

Its B58 six lists BMW Longlife approvals in 0W-20, and AutoPadre lists about 6.9 quarts. We confirm the approval on your manual and cap.

Can a 0W-12 go in my older 5 Series?

No, not unless your manual lists it. OilSpecifications.org notes LL-22 FE++ is approved only for selected engines from model year 2022.

How often should a 5 Series that commutes to Carson City get oil?

When CBS says the oil service is due, and at least every 12 months on cars built from July 1, 2013 on, per BMW's 2013 bulletin.

Do you service the 530e plug-in?

We change its engine oil and filter and check its fluids like any 5 Series. The high-voltage system is left to BMW.

Which shop is closest to I-580?

Longley Lane in south Reno sits near the I-580 corridor, and College Parkway serves the Carson City end. Both take drive-ins.
