BMW X1 Oil Change: Small BMW, Same Longlife Rules
An X1 is due for oil when its Condition Based Service display calls for the engine oil service, and on X1s built from July 1, 2013 on BMW's service bulletin puts that due date on a 12-month basis at the latest. The 2016 and newer X1 with the 2.0-liter turbo four takes a BMW Longlife-approved 0W-20, with about 5.5 to 5.6 quarts listed for the F48 and U11 generations.

The X1 is the BMW people buy for Reno errands: a short hop down McCarran, a school drop-off in Somersett, a Costco run in Sparks. That kind of driving is exactly what makes the oil life on a small turbo engine worth watching, because short trips in a cold climate never let the oil get fully hot. BMW has built three generations of X1 for the US, and each one uses a slightly different engine, so we start every visit by reading the car, not by assuming.
At a glance
- 2013 to 2015 E84: N20 2.0 turbo four (xDrive28i) or N55 3.0 six (xDrive35i), Longlife-01 typical
- 2016 to 2022 F48: B46 2.0 turbo four, 0W-20, about 5.5 to 5.6 qt by year
- 2023 and newer U11: B48 2.0 turbo four in the xDrive28i and M35i, 0W-20, about 5.6 qt
- CBS sets the date; BMW's 2013 bulletin caps the oil service at 12 months

Three X1 generations, three engine families
The capacity figures come from the AutoPadre and Autofiles lookups, which both tell owners to confirm in the manual, and we do. The approval matters more than the number. BMW does not accept a generic 0W-20; it lists its own Longlife standards, and OilSpecifications.org notes that LL-17 FE+ is approved only for selected gasoline engines. An F48 or U11 X1 commonly lists it among its approvals, and an E84 with the N20 typically lists Longlife-01. We match the approval printed for your car.
| Years | Engine | Oil listed | Capacity class |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2013-2015 (E84) | N20 2.0 turbo four, N55 3.0 six | BMW Longlife-01, often 5W-30 | Read the manual for your engine |
| 2016-2022 (F48) | B46 2.0 turbo four | Longlife approvals in 0W-20 | About 5.5 to 5.6 qt |
| 2023-on (U11) | B48 2.0 turbo four | Longlife approvals in 0W-20 | About 5.6 qt |
How Condition Based Service decides the date
BMW does not print a fixed mileage on the X1's dash. Condition Based Service watches how the engine is used and counts down to the next engine oil service, along with separate timers for brake fluid, the vehicle check and the microfilter. BMW of North America's November 2013 bulletin says the engine oil service due date is calculated on a 12-month basis for vehicles produced on or after July 1, 2013.
In practice an X1 that does mostly short Reno trips will often see the calendar arrive before the mileage. If the display says the service is due, or a year has passed since the last one, it is time. We reset the oil service in CBS before you leave, so the next countdown starts from today.
Cold mornings and a small turbo
Reno averages about 122 nights a year at or below freezing (NOAA 1991-2020 normals), and an X1 parked in a Northwest Reno driveway starts cold most of the winter. A turbo four is sensitive to what happens in the first minute: the low-viscosity 0W-20 BMW lists flows to the turbocharger bearings quickly, which is one reason the grade on the cap is not a suggestion. Short trips also leave moisture and fuel in the oil, and that is the honest reason not to stretch an X1 past its CBS date.
xDrive, the transmission and coolant on an X1
Most X1s here are xDrive cars. The F48 and U11 are front-drive based, and the rear axle is driven through a power take-off and an electronically controlled clutch, so there are extra fluid housings under the car. BMW treats several of these as long-life fills. We do not invent a schedule for them; we look for seepage at each visit and follow BMW's maintenance information. Our AWD differential fluid guide explains how we approach it.
The automatic transmission and the cooling system also run BMW-specific fluids. We check the coolant level and condition, and if the coolant looks off we tell you before anything is touched.
What happens to an X1 in our lane
- Pull in at Mae Anne Avenue, Longley Lane, College Parkway or US 395, no appointment needed.
- We read the CBS display, the oil cap and the manual to confirm the Longlife approval.
- Old oil out, new cartridge filter and seals in, approved full synthetic poured to the level the electronic oil gauge reads as full.
- Engine air filter and cabin microfilter pulled and shown to you, tires set, lights and wipers checked, battery tested at participating locations.
- Oil service reset in CBS, and you get a plain summary of what we saw.

Questions people ask
Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.
Does my X1 have a dipstick?
The F48 and U11 X1 check oil electronically through the iDrive menu. We fill to BMW's level and confirm it on the electronic gauge.
Can I use any 0W-20 in a 2018 X1?
It has to carry a BMW Longlife approval listed in your manual, such as LL-17 FE+ where BMW lists it. The grade alone is not enough.
My X1 says the oil is fine but it has been a year. Is it due?
Yes. BMW's 2013 service bulletin puts the engine oil service on a 12-month basis for cars built from July 1, 2013 on, whatever the mileage.
Do you change the cabin microfilter?
Yes. CBS tracks it on its own timer, and in smoke season it often needs replacing sooner. We show you the old one first.
Does an X1 need a smog check?
If it is registered in the Washoe testing area and past its first three registrations, the Nevada DMV requires one at renewal. Our two Reno service centers test it.
