BMW X7 Oil Change: Big Sump, Big Trips, Same CBS Rules

The X7 arrived for 2019 and it is the BMW that hauls the whole family to Lake Tahoe: up the Mount Rose Highway past the summit, over to Incline Village, back down on a Sunday with skis on the roof. It is a heavy vehicle doing mountain work, and its engines carry a lot of oil. Here is what BMW publishes for the X7 and what we do when one pulls in.

Six or eight: the X7 engines

The xDrive40i uses BMW's B58 3.0-liter turbo six, later with 48-volt mild-hybrid assist. AutoPadre lists 6.9 quarts for the 2023 car and 7.2 quarts for 2024 on, with 0W-20 and 0W-12 appearing in the later listings. The M50i used the N63 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 and the M60i that followed uses the S68 V8; AutoPadre lists both at about 11.1 to 11.4 quarts in 0W-30.

Those numbers are why we confirm the engine code before we pour. A V8 X7 takes far more oil than a six, and its approval is not the same. BimmerWorld describes BMW's 0W-12 LL-22 FE++ oil as meant for 2023 and newer B48 and B58 hybrid engines, so a late xDrive40i may list it while an earlier one lists LL-17 FE+ or LL-01 FE in 0W-20. Your manual decides.

Condition Based Service in BMW's terms

BMW's Condition Based Service tracks the engine oil, brake fluid, the vehicle check and the microfilter on separate counters, and shows each in the iDrive menu. BMW of North America's November 2013 bulletin states that the engine oil service due date is based on a 12-month interval for vehicles produced on or after July 1, 2013. An X7 that only does the school run and a few Tahoe weekends still comes due every year.

What a Mount Rose climb asks of a heavy SUV

The climb from south Reno to the Mount Rose summit is long and steep, and a loaded three-row SUV works its engine, cooling system and transmission hard on the way up and its brakes on the way down. That is the kind of use BMW's computer counts when it shortens a CBS countdown. We check the coolant level and look for leaks around the turbochargers and oil cooler lines, which run hot on a long grade.

Winter adds the cold side. An X7 parked overnight in Incline Village starts in colder air than Reno sees, and the low-viscosity oil BMW lists is part of what keeps that start gentle on the engine. Our high-altitude maintenance guide covers the rest.

xDrive, air suspension and filters

Every US X7 is xDrive, with a transfer case and front and rear differentials that BMW treats largely as long-life fills. We inspect them for seepage at each visit and do not override BMW's schedule. Our X7 checklist

• Engine code and Longlife approval confirmed before any oil goes in.
• New cartridge filter and seals, approved full synthetic filled to the electronic gauge.
• Transfer case and differentials checked for leaks; coolant, brake fluid level, tires, lights and wipers checked.
• Engine air filter and microfilter pulled and shown; battery tested at participating locations.
• CBS oil service reset and a written summary.
