Chevy Blazer Oil Change: The 2.0 Turbo, the 3.6 V6 and the Early 2.5

The 2019 and newer Blazer takes dexos1 full synthetic, in SAE 0W-20 for the 2.0L turbo four and SAE 5W-30 for the 3.6L V6, according to the 2024 Blazer Owner Manual and GM's 2026 capacity chart. The Oil Life System sets the timing, and GM wants the change within 600 miles of the Change Engine Oil Soon message and at least once a year.

A pickup truck on a slushy winter highway

The current Blazer came back as a midsize crossover for the 2019 model year, and it has carried three gas engines since then: a 2.5-liter four in the early base trims, the 2.0-liter turbo four that most local Blazers have, and the 3.6-liter V6 in the RS and Premier. Each engine has its own grade and its own fill, so the first thing we do in the lane is read the engine label. The electric Blazer EV shares the name but has no engine oil at all, so this page is about the gas models.

At a glance

  • 2.0L turbo (LSY): dexos1 0W-20, 5.3 quarts with filter (GM TechLink 2026 chart)
  • 3.6L V6 (LGX): dexos1 5W-30, 6.0 quarts with filter
  • 2019 to 2021 2.5L (LCV): 5.0 quarts front drive, 6.0 quarts AWD
  • Oil Life System decides; within 600 miles of the message, at least once a year

Which oil goes in which Blazer

The 2.5-liter is the one that trips people up. GM's 2019-2020 chart lists it at 5W-20, and the 2021 chart moves it to dexos1 0W-20, so on those trucks we follow the oil fill cap and the manual in the glovebox. The 2024 Blazer Owner Manual also allows SAE 0W-30 in the V6 where temperatures fall below minus 20 F, which is colder than a normal Reno winter but not unheard of on a trip to the high country.

The manual's wording on the oil itself is short: use full synthetic engine oils that meet the dexos1 specification, and look for the dexos1 approved logo on the bottle. It also says not to add anything to the oil, and that engine oil flushes are not recommended.

How the Oil Life System counts

GM does not print a mileage interval for a modern Blazer. The 2024 Blazer Owner Manual describes a computer system that tracks engine revolutions, engine temperature and miles driven, and it says the mileage at which a change is called for can vary considerably. When the Change Engine Oil Soon message comes on, the manual asks for the change within the next 600 miles. Under the best conditions the system may not call for a change for up to a year, but the oil and filter must still be changed at least once a year.

If the system is ever reset by accident, GM's answer is to change the oil 3,000 miles after the last change. We reset the system after every change and put a reminder sticker on the windshield as a second record. Our oil change light guide explains the reset if you ever need to do it yourself.

The Mount Rose question

The same manual puts a vehicle mainly driven in hilly or mountainous terrain on the severe-service list, along with frequent trailer towing and heavy city traffic in hot weather. A Blazer that lives off Mae Anne Avenue starts its day at about 4,917 feet (USGS) and spends its weekends climbing the Mount Rose Highway or I-80 toward Donner Summit. That is real work for a small turbo, and the Oil Life System counts it, which is why many local owners see the percentage fall faster than a friend's car in a flat city.

That is not a reason to change the oil early by habit. It is a reason to believe the percentage when it drops, check the dipstick once a month as the manual asks, and get in soon after the message appears.

Filters, coolant and the 9-speed

Gas Blazers with an engine air filter life monitor show a Replace At Next Oil Change message when the filter is due, and the manual asks you to reset that monitor after a new filter goes in. Reno's dry air, about 7.35 inches of rain a year on the NOAA normals, loads that filter with fine dust, and the cabin filter collects the same dust plus summer smoke. We pull both and show them to you before anything is replaced.

The cooling system is filled with DEX-COOL from the factory. The manual says the automatic transmission fluid level does not need routine checking and that a leak is the only reason for fluid loss, so on the lift we look for seepage at the pan and lines rather than pulling a dipstick that is not there. A coolant service or transmission fluid service is something we quote, and you decide.

Your Blazer in our lane

  • Engine confirmed from the label, then dexos1 oil in the right grade and a new filter
  • Oil Life System reset to 100 percent before you leave
  • Engine and cabin air filters pulled and shown
  • Coolant level, battery test at participating locations, belts and hoses
  • Tire pressure, lights, wipers and washer fluid
  • A look underneath for leaks at the transmission, AWD unit and axle seals

Reno Northwest

Went in for an oil change. Whole process took less than 20 minutes. Kind of hard to find, but other than that this place was great!

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

Does a Chevy Blazer take 0W-20 or 5W-30?

It depends on the engine. GM's 2026 chart lists dexos1 0W-20 for the 2.0L turbo and dexos1 5W-30 for the 3.6L V6.

How much oil does a Blazer hold?

GM lists 5.3 quarts with the filter for the 2.0L turbo and 6.0 quarts for the 3.6L V6.

My Blazer still shows 40 percent oil life after a year. Is it due?

Yes. The 2024 Blazer Owner Manual says the oil and filter must be changed at least once a year regardless of the percentage.

Does my Blazer need a smog check?

If it is registered in the Washoe testing area and past its first three registrations, yes, per the Nevada DMV. Both of our Reno service centers test it. Blazers registered in Carson City or Douglas County are not tested.

Do I need an appointment?

No. Drive in at any of our four service centers and we take it while you wait.
