Ford Edge Oil Change: 5W-30, the Altitude Note and the Monitor

Ford's 2024 Edge Owner's Manual lists SAE 5W-30 meeting WSS-M2C961-A1 for both EcoBoost engines, 5.5 quarts with the filter for the 2.0-liter and 6.0 quarts for the 2.7-liter. The Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor sets the interval at up to one year or 10,000 miles, and Ford says never to go past one year or 10,000 miles between changes.

Ford built the Edge through the 2024 model year, and most of the later ones around Reno carry the 2.0-liter EcoBoost four, with the 2.7-liter twin-turbo V6 in the ST. Earlier Edges, from the first generation and the first years of the second, also offered naturally aspirated V6 engines with their own oil grades, so on an older Edge we go by the cap. The 2024 manual has one line that most owners never read and that matters more in this region than almost anywhere: an altitude note.

At a glance

  • 2.0-liter EcoBoost: SAE 5W-30, WSS-M2C961-A1, 5.5 qt with filter (2024 Edge Owner's Manual)
  • 2.7-liter EcoBoost (ST): SAE 5W-30, 6.0 qt with filter
  • Regular use above 5,000 ft and below -4 F: Ford recommends the alternative SAE 0W-30, WSS-M2C963-A1
  • Oil-life monitor up to one year or 10,000 miles; six months or 5,000 if the monitor resets early

Ford's altitude line, explained

Under each EcoBoost oil specification, the 2024 Edge manual adds a note: if you use the vehicle regularly above 5,000 feet and in temperatures under -4 F, use the alternative engine oil, SAE 0W-30 to Ford WSS-M2C963-A1. Our four service centers sit between 4,426 and 4,917 feet on USGS elevation data, just under that line. Many of our customers do not live under it. Incline Village, Kingsbury and the rest of the Tahoe basin sit well above 5,000 feet, and Minden, close by, averages about two nights a year at or below 0 F on the NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals.

So the honest answer is that most Reno and Carson City Edges stay on 5W-30, and an Edge that lives at the lake through the winter is the case Ford describes. Tell us where the car sleeps and we will pour the grade Ford lists for it.

Capacities and fluids by engine

Ford also lists 0W-30 for any climate that reaches -22 F or below. Both engines use the same yellow coolant specification, and the V6 carries close to three more quarts of it. We test coolant strength at every visit, since freezing nights in Carson City run about 146 a year on the NOAA normals.

What the oil-life monitor allows

Ford's general maintenance information for the 2024 Edge says the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor shows a message at the proper interval, which may be up to one year or 10,000 miles, and that the change should be made within two weeks or 500 miles of the message. If the display resets early or stops working, Ford's fallback is six months or 5,000 miles from the last change.

The same section lists the driving that raises oil consumption: long stretches at high engine speed, heavy loads, engine braking and hard use. A loaded Edge coming down from Spooner Summit on US-50 checks a few of those boxes, so we look at the level and the condition of what drains out.

Our Edge checklist

  • Oil at the grade and Ford spec that fit how and where you drive, new filter, monitor reset
  • Cabin filter, which Ford says should always be installed, and the engine air filter, pulled and shown
  • Coolant level and strength, brake and washer fluid
  • Battery test, belts, wipers, bulbs and tire pressure
  • A look under the car for leaks and torn boots on AWD models

What a customer said

Gardnerville

I have a 2018 Ford Raptor with a ADD off-road bumper. Unfortunately the bumper manufacturers didn’t design the bumper for it routine oil changes. So the shop I went to, went out of their way and figured out a way to do the oil change. Couldn’t be more happy with their dedication and service. They have my business for all my vehicles now.
