Jeep Gladiator Oil Change and Towing Notes

A Jeep Gladiator with the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 takes 0W-20 to Chrysler's MS-6395 standard, and the 3.0 EcoDiesel offered from 2021 to 2023 takes the diesel oil listed in its manual. Jeep's oil change indicator times the change, and Kelley Blue Book's summary of Jeep's schedule sets the outer limit at 10,000 miles or 12 months.

A pickup truck on a slushy winter highway

The Gladiator is a Wrangler with a bed, and the bed gets used: firewood from the Pine Nuts, hay from a Smith Valley ranch, a dirt bike for the weekend. Jeep rates some Gladiator configurations to tow up to 7,700 pounds. A truck that carries and pulls weight while crawling trails is about as severe as service gets, which shapes how we look at it in the bay.

Weight changes the oil math

The oil change indicator in a Gladiator works the same way as in a Wrangler, reading load, temperature and run time. Kelley Blue Book's summary of Jeep's schedule says it may ask for a change as early as about 3,500 miles and never later than 10,000 miles or 12 months. A loaded bed, a trailer or a long low-range crawl all push the alert earlier.

Carson Valley summers add heat: Minden averages about 68 days a year at 90 F or more (NOAA 1991 to 2020). A Gladiator towing up US 395 toward Topaz on an August afternoon is working its oil, its transmission fluid and its coolant all at once.

Engines and what goes in them

  • 3.6-liter Pentastar V6: 0W-20 meeting MS-6395, the same family as the JL Wrangler.
  • 3.0-liter EcoDiesel (2021 to 2023): the Chrysler-spec diesel oil in its manual, plus fuel filter and diesel exhaust fluid; see diesel oil change.
  • Eight-speed automatic or six-speed manual: each with the fluid Jeep lists; see transmission fluid service.

The axles carry the load

The Gladiator rides on solid front and rear axles with a transfer case between them, and its rear axle carries both payload and tongue weight. Jeep's maintenance schedule lists the axle and transfer case fluids with severe-service checks for towing, off-road use and water. Gear oil that has been through a hot towing summer can look dark and smell burnt, and that is what we look for.

We check levels on request and can do differential service with the gear oil Jeep names. Axle repair and gear swaps are outside our service centers; if we see a seal weeping, we show you.

Gardnerville service center, US 395

Our Gardnerville service center at 1293 US Hwy 395 N is the closest for Minden, Gardnerville Ranchos, Topaz and Smith Valley, open Monday to Friday 9 to 5 and Saturday 9 to 3. No appointment. We confirm the engine, drain, fit a new filter, refill to capacity, reset the indicator and run the multi-point check: engine air filter, belts, coolant, brake fluid, battery at participating locations, tire pressure for the load, lights and wipers. Then you decide what else, if anything.

What a customer said

Reno Northwest

Always good work on my Jeep. Somewhat of a high tienover, new techs do not know full scope of work. Rotating staff some not all equally trained. It's hit or miss.

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

What oil does a Jeep Gladiator take?

The 3.6 Pentastar takes 0W-20 meeting MS-6395. The EcoDiesel takes the diesel oil listed in its manual.

Does towing change my oil interval?

Yes. The indicator shortens the interval under load, and Kelley Blue Book's summary of Jeep's schedule says the change is due by 10,000 miles or 12 months at the latest.

Do you check the rear axle on a Gladiator?

Yes, on request, and we can replace the gear oil with the type Jeep specifies.

Does a Gladiator registered in Douglas County need a smog check?

No. Douglas County does not require smog checks for registration.
