Jeep Renegade Oil Change: 1.3 Turbo, 2.4 Tigershark, Dirt Roads

The 2.4L Tigershark Renegade takes 0W-20 meeting FCA MS-6395 and about 5.5 quarts, and the 1.3L turbo holds about 4.8 quarts with a grade that depends on its emissions version, so its oil filler cap decides, per the 2022 Renegade capacities pages. Jeep's oil change indicator sets the timing, never past 10,000 miles or one year, and the 2019 manual calls for 4,000 miles in dusty, off-road use.

The Renegade is the smallest Jeep sold in the U.S., built from 2015 through the 2023 model year, and the Trailhawk version in particular gets driven where its badge suggests. Around Reno that means the dirt roads up Peavine Peak, the washboard out toward Pyramid Lake and the Jeep trails in the Pine Nut Mountains. That kind of use changes the oil schedule in Jeep's own book, and it is the first thing we ask about.

At a glance

  • 2.4L Tigershark: SAE 0W-20 meeting FCA MS-6395, 5.5 qt with filter (2022 capacities table)
  • 1.3L turbo: 4.8 qt with filter; grade by emissions version, so the filler cap decides
  • Indicator-based interval, never over 10,000 miles or one year (2019 manual)
  • Dusty and off-road use: every 4,000 miles or 350 engine hours

Three engines in nine model years

Early Renegades from 2015 to 2018 offered a 1.4L MultiAir turbo, mostly with a manual gearbox, and the 2.4L Tigershark four with the nine-speed automatic. From 2019 the 1.3L turbo took over as the upgrade engine. The capacities table reproduced from the 2022 Renegade owner's manual lists the 2.4L at 5.5 quarts with the filter on SAE 0W-20 that meets FCA Material Standard MS-6395, and the 1.3L at 4.8 quarts.

For the 1.3L the same table gives two grades depending on the engine's emissions version, a 0W-30 meeting MS-13340 or a 0W-20, and tells you to refer to the oil filler cap. That is what we do. The 1.4L MultiAir is not in the tables we were able to verify for this page, so on those cars the cap and the glovebox manual decide.

Peavine dust and the 4,000-mile rule

The servicing chapter of the 2019 Renegade owner's manual explains that the vehicle has an automatic oil change indicator that lights based on engine operating conditions, and asks for service within the next 500 miles once it appears. It then sets a hard limit: under no circumstances should the interval exceed 10,000 miles, one year or 350 hours of engine run time.

The part that matters around here is the severe-duty note. A Renegade operated in a dusty, off-road environment, or mostly at idle, should have its oil changed at 4,000 miles or 350 hours, and the manual says the indicator will not light for that condition. A Trailhawk that spends spring weekends on the Peavine roads is on that schedule whether the dash says so or not.

Air filters after a dirt weekend

Fine high-desert dust works its way into the engine air filter first. On a small turbo engine a clogged filter costs power on the climb back up to town. We pull it and tap it out in front of you so you can see what came off the trail. Our dusty roads guide covers how often to look.

The cabin filter catches the same dust, plus whatever smoke drifts in during summer. Both are quick on a Renegade.

Nine-speed, PTU and coolant

Automatic Renegades use a nine-speed transmission. Four-wheel-drive models add a power transfer unit at the front and a rear drive module, each with its own fluid. We check all three for seepage on the lift, and a differential service covers the driveline fluids with the specified oil.

Coolant is Mopar's OAT formula that meets FCA MS.90032, per the capacities table. The 2019 manual asks for a coolant protection check every 12 months before freezing weather, which in Carson City means before the 146 nights a year at or below freezing on the NOAA normals.

What a Renegade gets in our bay

  • Engine identified, the grade from the filler cap, a new filter and the correct fill
  • Oil change indicator reset
  • Engine air filter and cabin filter shown, trail dust included
  • Under-body look at the PTU, rear drive module, boots and skid areas
  • Coolant protection, battery test at participating locations, belts
  • Tire pressure set for the road, not the trail

What a customer said

Reno Northwest

Always good work on my Jeep. Somewhat of a high tienover, new techs do not know full scope of work. Rotating staff some not all equally trained. It's hit or miss.

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

What oil does a Jeep Renegade 2.4 take?

SAE 0W-20 meeting FCA MS-6395, about 5.5 quarts with the filter, per the 2022 capacities table.

What oil does a 1.3 turbo Renegade take?

It depends on the engine's emissions version. The 2022 table lists 0W-30 meeting MS-13340 for some and 0W-20 for others, and says to use the grade on the oil filler cap.

My Renegade's oil light has not come on but I drive dirt roads. Is it due?

The 2019 manual says dusty and off-road use calls for a change every 4,000 miles or 350 hours, and that the indicator will not light for that condition.

Does a Renegade need a smog check in Carson City?

No. The Nevada DMV does not require emissions tests for vehicles registered in Carson City. Washoe-registered Renegades past their first three registrations are tested.
