Jeep Compass Oil Change Guide
The 2017 to 2022 Jeep Compass uses a 2.4-liter Tigershark four, and the 2023 and newer Compass a 2.0-liter turbo; each takes the grade on its oil cap and in its manual. Jeep's oil change indicator decides when, and Kelley Blue Book's summary of Jeep's schedule says no later than 10,000 miles or 12 months.

The Compass is the smallest Jeep most people in Northern Nevada drive, a compact SUV that commutes from Sun Valley or Stead into Reno and heads for the snow on weekends. It shares a lot of hardware with the Cherokee and Renegade, which makes its service simple once you know which engine it has.

The 2.4 and its oil level
The 2.4 Tigershark is a durable engine with one habit owners should know: some use oil between changes, especially as miles climb. The cure is attention rather than worry. Check the dipstick every couple of fill-ups, top off with the grade on the cap, and keep the changes on time. We note the level when you pull in so you know how much it used since last time.
For a higher-mileage 2.4, a high-mileage oil in the listed grade is an option we will talk through with you.
The 2.0 turbo from 2023
Jeep moved the Compass to a 2.0-liter turbo four for 2023, paired with an eight-speed automatic. A turbo engine leans on its oil harder, so we use a full synthetic in the grade on the cap and never stretch past what the indicator asks for.
When the light comes on
Kelley Blue Book's summary of Jeep's schedule says the oil change indicator may call for service as soon as about 3,500 miles or as late as 10,000, depending on driving, and that the oil and filter should be changed by 10,000 miles or 12 months regardless. A Compass that sits in a Stead driveway through a week of 20 F mornings and then does short hops to the store is the kind of use that brings the light on early; Reno averages about 25 nights a year at 20 F or colder (NOAA 1991 to 2020).
4x4 Compass fluids
- Power transfer unit and rear drive module on 4x4 models: small gear oil fills with their own schedule; see differential service.
- Automatic transmission: the nine-speed in earlier years, the eight-speed from 2023, each with Jeep's specified fluid.
- Coolant: a long-life type; we check level and freeze point.
- Engine and cabin air filters: high-desert dust and smoke season shorten both.
Visit either Reno service center
Mae Anne Avenue and Longley Lane are both easy from the North Valleys via US 395. No appointment needed. We confirm the engine, check the level before draining, fit a new filter, refill, reset the indicator and run the multi-point check while you wait. In the Washoe County testing area a Compass past its first three registrations needs a smog check at renewal, and our Reno service centers do them. See smog check.

Questions people ask
Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.
What oil does a Jeep Compass take?
The grade printed on the oil cap for its engine, the 2.4 Tigershark or the 2.0 turbo. We match the cap.
Is it normal for my Compass to use oil?
Some 2.4 engines use a little between changes. Check the dipstick regularly and tell us how much you add.
Can I get a smog check with my oil change?
At our two Reno service centers, yes. The Washoe County testing area requires one at renewal after the first three registrations.
Does the 4x4 Compass need differential service?
The rear drive module and transfer unit have their own gear oil, and we can service them with the fluid Jeep specifies.
