Lexus GX Oil Change for a Truck That Actually Goes Off-Road

Lexus lists the GX 460's 4.6-liter V8 at 0W-20 synthetic with a 10,000-mile interval under normal use, and the 2024 and newer GX 550's twin-turbo V6 also uses 0W-20 per its manual. But Lexus requires a 5,000-mile change when a vehicle is driven on dirt roads, tows or idles a lot, and many GX owners here do exactly that.

A two-lane highway through snow-dusted hills

The GX is a body-on-frame Lexus built on the same bones as a Land Cruiser Prado, and in Northern Nevada it gets used that way: Peavine trails, the dirt roads to the Pine Nut Mountains, a boat to Topaz Lake. It is the Lexus where the special-conditions rule matters most. Here is what Lexus publishes and what we look at on a GX that earns its keep.

The V8 years and the turbo V6

Lexus Tech Tip L-TT-0142-13 lists the GX 460 with the 1UR-FE V8 at 0W-20, 8.2 quarts with a filter change, and a 10,000-mile interval for the 2010 to 2014 models, and the GX 460 kept that engine through 2023. It is a big oil capacity by passenger-car standards, and we fill to the manual's figure and confirm on the dipstick.

For 2024, Lexus redesigned the GX as the GX 550 with a 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6. Its manual lists 0W-20 full synthetic. Turbochargers add heat to the oil, and a GX 550 climbing Kingsbury Grade with a full roof rack is working them. We read the cap on every GX before pouring.

When the 5,000-mile rule applies

The same Lexus tech tip says that if the vehicle is driven off-road or on dirt roads, tows a trailer, makes repeated short trips under 32 F, or idles extensively, the engine oil must be replaced at 5,000 miles, regardless of the oil specified. That is Lexus's language, not ours.

Plenty of GX owners in Washoe Valley and Johnson Lane drive a gravel road just to get home. Households in Johnson Lane average 2.42 vehicles and in the 89704 Washoe Valley ZIP 2.87 (ACS 2020-2024), which often means one of them is the truck that does the dirty work. If that is your GX, we will put a 5,000-mile sticker on it and explain why.

Four-wheel drive, differentials and cooling

The GX has full-time four-wheel drive with a center differential and transfer case, plus front and rear differentials. Each holds gear oil with its own interval in the Lexus maintenance guide, and Lexus shortens them for towing and off-road use. We check each for leaks during the oil change and offer a differential service when the guide or the condition calls for it.

Towing in a Reno summer, with 65 days a year at 90 F or more (NOAA 1991-2020 normals), puts the cooling system and the automatic transmission under load. We check coolant level and protection and look at the transmission fluid where the GX allows it. The rear air suspension on many GX 460s has no fluid, but we note any sag we see.

A GX visit

  1. Drive in at any of our four service centers. the bays take full-size SUVs; no appointment.
  2. Confirm 0W-20 and the fill quantity for your engine, drain, new filter and gasket, refill and check the dipstick.
  3. Look at the engine and cabin filters, differentials and transfer case for seepage, coolant, brake fluid, battery (participating locations), tires, lights and wipers.
  4. Reset the maintenance reminder and tell you whether your driving fits Lexus's 5,000-mile conditions.

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

Is my GX 460 a 10,000-mile vehicle?

Under normal driving, yes, per Lexus. If it sees dirt roads, towing or lots of idling, Lexus says change the oil every 5,000 miles.

What oil does the GX 550 use?

0W-20 full synthetic, per its owner's manual. We confirm on the cap.

Do you change differential fluid on a GX?

Yes, when the Lexus maintenance guide or the condition of the fluid calls for it. We check the front and rear differentials and transfer case at every visit.
