Lexus ES Oil Change: The Year Decides the Oil

Lexus lists the 2013 and newer ES 350 and the 2013 to 2018 ES 300h at 0W-20 synthetic with a 10,000-mile interval, while the 2010 to 2012 ES 350 used 5W-30 at 5,000 miles. The 2019 and newer ES 300h and ES 250 move to 0W-16, and every ES returns to a 5,000-mile change under Lexus's special operating conditions.

A two-lane highway through snow-dusted hills

The ES is the Lexus sedan people keep for 200,000 miles, and plenty of the ones we see are on their second or third owner. That is exactly why the year matters: the oil and the interval changed in 2013, and again for the hybrids in 2019. A second owner who follows the sticker the last service center left may be following the wrong rule. Here is what Lexus published, year by year.

2010 to 2012 versus 2013 and newer

Lexus Tech Tip L-TT-0142-13 lists the ES 350 with the 2GR-FE V6 at 5W-30 and a 5,000-mile interval for 2010 to 2012, and at 0W-20 and 10,000 miles for 2013 and 2014. The tip is explicit that only Lexus vehicles in which 0W-20 is mandatory were approved for the longer interval; a car where 0W-20 is merely an option stays at 5,000 miles even if you pour 0W-20.

So an early ES 350 is a 5,000-mile car by Lexus's own rule. We put the right sticker on it. The later cars, including the 2019 and newer ES 350 with the 2GR-FKS engine, are 0W-20 and 10,000 miles or 12 months under normal driving, per TV Lexus's ES chart.

The hybrids and the 0W-16 switch

The 2013 to 2018 ES 300h used 0W-20. The 2019 and newer ES 300h, with the A25A-FXS 2.5-liter, and the 2021 and newer ES 250 AWD list 0W-16 synthetic. It is thinner than 0W-20 and it is what the engine was calibrated around. We carry 0W-16 and read the cap so the grade matches.

An ES 300h's engine shuts off and restarts constantly in Reno traffic, which means it often runs cooler and shorter than a gas engine. That is a reason to keep the 12-month side of the schedule even if the hybrid barely added miles. Nevada exempts hybrids from smog for the first five model years; after that, an ES 300h registered in the Washoe testing area tests yearly at our Reno service centers.

The 5,000-mile special conditions

Lexus's tech tip names the conditions that bring any ES back to 5,000 miles: off-road or dirt roads, towing, repeated short trips under 32 F, and extensive idling. A retired owner in Old Southwest Reno who makes two-mile trips through a winter with 122 freezing nights a year (Reno airport, NOAA 1991-2020 normals) is closer to that line than a commuter who drives the ES to Carson City every day.

We ask how the car is driven and tell you which side of the line it looks like. We do not decide for you.

Other ES items we look at

  • Cabin filter behind the glovebox: an ES is a commuter car and its cabin filter catches smoke-season soot.
  • Engine air filter: easy to inspect and worth a look in high-desert dust.
  • Coolant: Lexus pink Super Long Life Coolant, checked for level and protection and matched if topped off.
  • Transmission: the ES 350's automatic and the hybrid's eCVT use Lexus fluids with long intervals; we inspect and follow the maintenance guide.

How an ES visit goes

Pull in at any of our four service centers, no appointment. We confirm the year and engine, pour 0W-20 or 0W-16 to match, fit a new filter and drain plug gasket, run the maintenance check while it drains, reset the maintenance light and tell you what we saw. Mae Anne Avenue and College Parkway are open Saturday 8 to 4.

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

Is my 2011 ES 350 a 10,000-mile car?

No. Lexus lists the 2010 to 2012 ES 350 at 5W-30 and 5,000 miles, even if 0W-20 is used.

What oil does a 2020 ES 300h take?

0W-16 full synthetic, per TV Lexus's ES chart for the 2019 and newer hybrid.

Does an ES need oil every 12 months even with low miles?

Yes. The interval is 10,000 miles or 12 months under normal driving, whichever comes first.

Can you do the 5,000-mile tire rotation visit?

We check fluid levels and tire pressure at every visit. Tire rotation is not on our service menu, so we will tell you if it looks due.
