Lincoln Navigator Oil Change: The Twin-Turbo V6 and the Towing Column
Every Navigator since 2018 runs a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6, and Ford's 2024 Expedition Owner's Manual, which covers the same engine, lists SAE 5W-30 meeting WSS-M2C961-A1 at 6.0 quarts with the filter. The Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor sets the change, never more than one year or 10,000 miles apart, and towing moves the Navigator onto the severe-service items.

Navigators in Douglas County earn their keep. We see them on US 395 in Gardnerville with a horse trailer, a travel trailer or a ski-loaded roof box headed up Kingsbury Grade, and the 2025 redesign kept the same recipe: Lincoln's spec sheet lists a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 with a ten-speed automatic and up to 8,700 pounds of towing with the heavy-duty trailer package. Two turbos, a heavy vehicle and long grades all tell the oil-life monitor to count faster. This page covers the oil, the interval rules and the extra items that come with a hitch.
At a glance
- 3.5L twin-turbo V6: SAE 5W-30, Ford WSS-M2C961-A1, 6.0 qt with filter (Ford 2024 Expedition manual, same engine)
- Monitor-driven interval; do not exceed one year or 10,000 miles
- Towing is severe service: spark plugs and transfer case fluid at 60,000 miles
- 2025 Navigator: same engine family, ten-speed, 8,700 lb towing with HDTT (Lincoln spec sheet)

One engine, two generations
The 2018 to 2024 Navigator and the 2025 and newer truck both use a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 paired with a ten-speed automatic. Lincoln's 2025 technical specifications describe it as a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 with auto start-stop, built at Ford's Cleveland Engine Plant. Ford's 2024 Expedition Owner's Manual, written for the same engine, lists 6.0 quarts with the filter of SAE 5W-30 meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C961-A1.
We did not have the Navigator's own capacity page in front of us for this write-up, so in the bay we follow the Navigator's cap and dipstick, and we fill to the full mark rather than to a number. The spec on the bottle is the part we never compromise: WSS-M2C961-A1, in the grade on the cap.
A hitch changes the schedule
Ford's 2024 Expedition manual lists driving with a heavy load or towing as severe service and says to follow the severe items in the maintenance chart, which include replacing the spark plugs and changing the transfer case fluid at 60,000 miles. The oil itself stays on the monitor, and the monitor sees towing: higher load and heat on two turbochargers shorten the countdown on their own.
Whatever the display says, the manual sets a ceiling of one year or 10,000 miles between oil changes. A Navigator that tows to Topaz Lake in July and sits for the winter still gets its change at twelve months. Our towing and oil changes guide goes through the summer side of trailer season.
Gardnerville winters and the 0W-30 line
Minden averages about 188 nights a year at or below freezing and about two a year at or below zero (NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals). The Ford manual names an alternative oil for extreme cold: SAE 0W-30 meeting WSS-M2C963-A1 where temperatures reach minus 22 F, also recommended for vehicles used regularly above 5,000 feet below minus 4 F. A Navigator that lives in a Kingsbury or Stateline driveway is the case that note was written for.
Short winter trips matter too. A big V6 that starts cold for a run to the post office never gets its oil hot enough to boil off moisture. If your Navigator spends its winter that way, the monitor will ask sooner, and that is the right call.
What we look at on a Navigator
- Oil to the grade and Ford spec on the cap, a new filter, and the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor reset
- Cabin air filter, which the Expedition manual replaces every 20,000 miles, and the engine air filter, every 30,000 miles and sooner on dusty roads
- Transfer case and front and rear axle levels on 4x4 trucks, with a differential service at the same visit if you tow
- Ten-speed automatic checked for leaks; the manual's normal fluid change is at 150,000 miles
- Coolant level, both batteries where fitted, belts, trailer-light bulbs, wipers and tire pressure
The Gardnerville service center at 1293 US Hwy 395 N is closest for Minden, Genoa and the Kingsbury side; it opens at 9 on weekdays. Carson City and both Reno shops take Navigators too, no appointment needed.

What oil does a Lincoln Navigator take?
SAE 5W-30 meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C961-A1 for the 3.5L twin-turbo V6, per Ford's 2024 Expedition Owner's Manual for the same engine. We confirm with the cap on your Navigator.
How many quarts does the Navigator hold?
About 6.0 quarts with the filter, the figure Ford lists for this engine. We fill to the dipstick, not just to the number.
How often should a Navigator that tows get an oil change?
When the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor asks, which towing brings on sooner, and never more than one year or 10,000 miles apart.
Is the 2025 Navigator different under the hood?
Lincoln's 2025 spec sheet lists a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 with auto start-stop and a ten-speed automatic. We read its cap and manual the same way.
Does my Navigator need a smog check if it is registered in Douglas County?
No. Douglas County and Carson City registrations are not tested. Navigators registered in the Washoe County testing area are, once past their first three registrations, per the Nevada DMV.
