Mercedes-Benz E-Class Oil Change: Three Generations, One Indicator

Every E-Class from the 2010 W212 on schedules its oil through ASSYST Plus, and Mercedes-Benz dealers place the first Service A at about one year or 10,000 miles, then about every 20,000 miles or two years, with oil and filter at both Service A and Service B. The 2.0-liter four in later E 300 and E 350 models is commonly listed at about 6 liters with an MB 229.71 oil, while the E 450's M256 six holds far more, about 9.9 liters on Engine Oil Journal's chart, with approvals your manual names.

The E-Class is the long-distance Mercedes, and around Carson City it is often the car that does the state-government commute in the morning and the drive to Reno for dinner. It has run through three generations here: the W212 (2010 to 2016), the W213 (2017 to 2023) and the W214 that arrived for 2024. Engines changed with each one, from V6 and V8 gasoline engines and a BlueTEC diesel to today's turbo four and inline six with 48-volt assist. The oil changes with them.

E-Class engines and what they list

The four-cylinder capacity is from AutoPadre's E 350 lookup and the E 450 figure from Engine Oil Journal's Mercedes capacity chart; AutoPadre gives a lower figure for some E 450 years, so we go by the manual and the dipstick or electronic level reading on your car. BLAU Parts lists MB 229.71 for the 2.0-liter turbo four in the E 350.

How ASSYST Plus words it

Mercedes's ASSYST Plus system does the counting. Mercedes-Benz of Arcadia describes it as calculating service needs from driving habits, time, mileage and environmental conditions, and an indicator lights when a visit is due. The display names it as Service A or Service B. Mercedes-Benz of Buckhead lists motor oil and filter replacement in both.

If you ignore the reminder, the display counts overdue days or miles. We would rather see an E-Class before that happens, and we reset the oil service in ASSYST Plus as part of every visit.

Carson City cold, Carson City heat

The Carson City weather station averages 146 nights a year at or below freezing and about 40 days at 90 F or hotter (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). An E-Class parked outside a state office on a January morning starts in serious cold, then spends August afternoons in a hot parking lot. That swing is the honest reason to keep the approved low-friction oil the manual lists, and to have the coolant level and the battery looked at before winter.

Carson City households have a mean commute of 20.5 minutes (ACS 2020-2024). Short commutes are fine for an E-Class as long as it gets a longer run now and then and its oil is changed on the ASSYST Plus date.

The older diesel and the newer mild hybrids

A W212 E 250 BlueTEC or E 350 BlueTEC has a diesel particulate filter and calls for a low-ash diesel-rated MB approval, typically MB 229.51 or 229.52. We pour diesel oil only with the sheet number your manual lists. The latest E 350 and E 450 use a 48-volt starter-generator; the oil service is the same, but the engine stops and starts more often in traffic, and ASSYST Plus counts that.

What else we look at on an E-Class

  • Transmission: the seven-speed and nine-speed automatics use Mercedes-specified fluid. We check for leaks and point you to the booklet's interval; our transmission fluid service page explains our approach.
  • 4MATIC transfer case and front axle checked for seepage.
  • Engine air filter and the dust or combination cabin filter pulled and shown.
  • Coolant level, brake fluid level, tires, lights, wipers and a battery test at participating locations.

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

What oil does a 2019 E 300 take?

Its 2.0-liter turbo four is commonly listed with an MB 229.71 oil. We read your cap and manual and pour the approved oil.

Why does an E 450 take so much more oil than an E 350?

The inline six has a much larger sump. Engine Oil Journal's chart lists about 9.9 liters for the W214 E 450 4MATIC.

Can you do the oil on a BlueTEC diesel E-Class?

Yes, with a diesel-rated MB approval such as 229.51 or 229.52 where your manual lists it.

Does Carson City require a smog check on my E-Class?

No. Vehicles registered in Carson City are not in a Nevada DMV emissions testing area.
