Mercedes-Benz GLC Oil Change: Gas, Plug-In and 4MATIC

The gasoline GLC lists oils approved to MB 229.71 or 229.72 in its latest versions, while the plug-in hybrid GLC lists MB 229.51 or 229.52, per Mercedes-Benz of Buckhead. The oil service rides on Mercedes's Service A and B rhythm, with the first visit at about one year or 10,000 miles and the ASSYST Plus indicator setting the exact date.

The GLC took over from the C-Class as the best-selling Mercedes in a lot of the country, and in Northern Nevada it is nearly always a 4MATIC. It is also one of the few vehicles where the gas and plug-in versions want different oil approvals. This page lays out what Mercedes publishes for each, how 4MATIC changes the visit, and what a GLC owner in the Carson Valley should know about winter.

Why the plug-in takes a different oil

Mercedes-Benz of Buckhead's oil listing splits the GLC in two. The non-plug-in GLC lists MB 229.71 and 229.72. The plug-in hybrid GLC lists MB 229.51 and 229.52. The difference is in the test sheet: the plug-in's engine starts cold far more often because it runs on battery first, and the 229.51 family is written for that duty.

Older GLC 300s, the 2016 to 2022 generation, have owners' manuals that list several approvals, often including MB 229.5 and 229.51 in a 0W-30 or 5W-30. The manual for that VIN wins. We stock MB 229.5 and 229.71 oils and tell you before the drain if your GLC's manual lists only something we do not have.

Service A, Service B and ASSYST Plus

Mercedes-Benz of Foothill lists Service A at one year or 10,000 miles. Later services alternate A and B roughly every 20,000 miles or two years, with B adding the cabin filter and a brake fluid exchange. ASSYST Plus adjusts the date for how the GLC is driven, and the cluster tells you which letter is next.

In Douglas County, where the mean commute is 26.2 minutes and households average 2.25 vehicles (ACS 2020-2024), a GLC often reaches 10,000 miles well before a year. In Carson City, with a 20.5-minute mean commute, the calendar side comes up more often. Either way the indicator is the guide.

4MATIC and the cold Valley mornings

4MATIC uses a transfer case to feed the front axle, and Mercedes specifies its own fluid for it. We check the transfer case and front differential for leaks and follow Mercedes's information on fluid service; see our differential service page for how we handle AWD units.

Minden averages 188 nights a year at or below freezing and two nights a year at or below zero (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). A GLC that sits outside in Gardnerville overnight starts on oil that is as cold as it gets in the region, and the low-viscosity MB approvals exist so oil reaches the turbo quickly on those mornings. The battery test, done at participating locations, is worth doing every fall.

Our GLC visit

  • No appointment at any of the four service centers.
  • MB approval confirmed for gas or plug-in, new cartridge filter and seal, refill to the capacity in the manual.
  • Coolant, brake fluid level, cabin filter condition, engine air filter, battery, tires, lights and wipers checked.
  • ASSYST Plus indicator reset, and a note of whether A or B comes next. Brake inspections and brake fluid exchanges are not on our menu, and we say so.
