Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Oil Change: Diesel, Gas and the Fleet Book

Sprinter dealers place the first Service A at about 10,000 miles or one year, and for 2009 and newer vans the interval then becomes 20,000 miles or two years, with the ASSYST Plus indicator naming each visit. Diesel Sprinters need a low-ash diesel oil with the MB approval the manual lists, usually MB 229.52 on current vans, and the 2.0-liter OM654 diesel holds about 10 liters with the filter.

The Sprinter is two different vehicles in Northern Nevada. One is the work van: a plumber's rig, a delivery route out of the Reno industrial parks, a shuttle running guests between Reno and the Tahoe resorts. The other is the camper van parked in a Gardnerville driveway between trips down US-395 to the Eastern Sierra. Both get oil changes, but the fleet van idles, stops and carries weight all day, and that changes what the indicator says and what we look at.

AutoPadre and Costa Oil both list about 10.6 quarts with the filter for the OM654 diesel in recent Sprinter 2500s. Addinol's description of MB 229.52 says it is for gasoline and diesel engines with or without a particulate filter and builds on 229.51; its list of particulate-filter diesels includes the OM642, OM651 and OM654. For the M274 gasoline Sprinter the published figures we found disagree, so we read the manual and the cap for that engine every time rather than repeat a number.

ASSYST Plus and the 20,000-mile book

Ray Catena Mercedes-Benz of Edison sets out the Sprinter rhythm plainly: Service A after 10,000 miles or one year, then for 2009 and newer vans, 20,000 miles or two years after the first Service A, with Service B adding a brake fluid exchange, a fuel filter and the cabin dust or combination filter. Mercedes-Benz of Arcadia notes that ASSYST Plus calculates service needs from driving habits, time, mileage and environmental conditions, so a hard-working van can be called in sooner.

We change the oil and filter, check the items in the booklet and reset the service indicator. The fuel filter, brake fluid and other Service B items we list for you with the mileage they are due.

What fleet duty does to a Sprinter

A delivery van that idles at stops, runs short legs and carries a full load all day is exactly the van ASSYST Plus shortens the countdown for. Diesel adds its own items: the particulate filter needs regular hot running to clean itself, and the diesel exhaust fluid tank needs filling. We check the DEF level and tell you if the dash is close to a warning.

For businesses, our fleet service program keeps a record of every visit by van, with the mileage and what was done, so the next Service B does not sneak up on a driver who never looks at the dash.

Camper vans on US-395

Gardnerville sees about 188 nights a year at or below freezing at the Minden station (NOAA 1991-2020 normals), and a camper Sprinter that sits from November to April starts its season on oil that aged without miles. That is why the calendar half of the Sprinter book matters. Before a summer run south on US-395, we also look at the tires on a heavy upfitted van, the coolant level and the cabin filter.

A Sprinter in our lane

  • High-roof vans: call the shop first, because bay door clearance differs by location.
  • Engine confirmed, MB approval read from the cap and manual, diesel-rated oil poured where listed.
  • New oil filter element and seal, level confirmed on the electronic gauge on vans without a dipstick.
  • DEF level, coolant, brake fluid level, tires, lights, wipers and a battery test at participating locations.
  • ASSYST Plus reset and a dated record for your fleet file.

Carson City

I don't think I've ever had an easier oil change. Adrian checked me in, he was very nice and professional. My car was done in no time. Definitely coming back.

What oil does a 2024 Sprinter diesel take?

Its OM654 diesel calls for a low-ash diesel oil with the MB approval in the manual, commonly MB 229.52, about 10 liters with the filter.

Can I go 20,000 miles between oil changes on my Sprinter?

On 2009 and newer vans the dealer book allows 20,000 miles or two years after the first Service A, but ASSYST Plus can call for it sooner under heavy use. Follow the display.

Do you handle Sprinter fleets?

Yes. Our fleet service program keeps per-van records and handles drive-ins at all four service centers.

Does a diesel Sprinter need a smog check in Reno?

Diesels up to 14,000 pounds GVWR registered in the Washoe testing area are tested at renewal per the Nevada DMV. Our Reno service centers can test it.
