Nissan Armada Oil Change: V8 Years and the 2025 Twin-Turbo

The 2017 to 2024 Armada with the 5.6L V8 takes 0W-20 SP and holds 6-7/8 quarts with the filter, changed every 7,500 miles or 6 months, or 5,000 miles when towing or under other severe use, per the 2024 Armada Owner's Manual. The 2025 Armada's 3.5L twin-turbo V6 also takes 0W-20 SP, holds 6-3/8 quarts and uses an Oil Control System that should never exceed one year or 10,000 miles.

The Armada is a full-size, body-on-frame SUV, and most of the ones we see work for it: a boat behind it on the way to Topaz Lake, three rows of kids heading to Heavenly, a horse trailer out of the Carson Valley. Nissan replaced the long-running 5.6-liter V8 with a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 for 2025, and the maintenance schedule changed with it. Here is what each manual says and how towing fits in.

Grade and fill by Armada generation

The first-generation Armada sold from 2004 to 2015 had an earlier version of the 5.6L. We have not verified its published figures for this page, so on those trucks we follow the cap and the glovebox manual.

Towing puts a V8 Armada on the 5,000-mile column

The 2024 Armada Owner's Manual lists towing a trailer, using a camper or a car-top carrier among the severe operating conditions, along with dusty conditions, rough or muddy roads, hot stop-and-go traffic and repeated short trips. A V8 Armada that pulls a boat to Topaz Lake down US-395 several weekends each summer, or a camp trailer up to the Sierra, belongs on the 5,000-mile or 6-month severe column.

The severe column also adds more frequent inspections of the brakes, steering, suspension, propeller shaft and exhaust. We look at what we can see on the lift and tell you what we found.

The 2025 Oil Control System

The twin-turbo V6 changed the logic. The 2025 Armada Owner's Manual describes an Oil Control System that calculates the distance to the next oil change from the driving conditions, and it cannot be adjusted manually. Its rule is plain: never exceed one year or 10,000 miles between changes. When the oil replacement indicator appears, the manual asks for the change within two weeks or 500 miles.

A turbocharged engine under a trailer load runs its oil hotter than the old V8 did, and the system accounts for that. If you tow often, expect the indicator well before 10,000 miles.

Transfer case, differentials and coolant

Four-wheel-drive Armadas get scheduled inspections of the transfer fluid and differential gear oil in both manuals, and the 2025 manual calls for replacing the rear differential oil on models with the differential lock under severe use. Nissan specifies its own transfer fluid and gear oils by name, and a differential service uses those specs.

Coolant is Nissan's blue Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant, which the 2025 manual rates at 105,000 miles or 7 years for the factory fill. Minden's 188 freezing nights a year on the NOAA normals and summer towing heat are both reasons to check its strength and level.

What we do on an Armada

  • Engine confirmed, 0W-20 to the listed fill, a new filter, the reminder reset
  • In-cabin microfilter, due at 15,000 miles in both manuals, pulled and shown
  • Engine air filter, coolant, brake fluid and power steering levels
  • Transfer case and differential seals checked for seepage
  • Battery test at participating locations, belts, hoses, tire pressure
  • Trailer lights checked if the trailer is with you
