Volvo XC40 Oil Change: T4, T5, B5, and Why the Recharge Skips It

Gas and mild-hybrid XC40s take a full synthetic 0W-20 meeting VCC RBS0-2AE, about 5.6 liters with the filter on the T5 and about 6.1 liters on the B5 per Volvo's support tables, changed every 10,000 miles or once a year. The all-electric XC40 Recharge has no engine oil to change, but it still gets cabin filter, brake fluid and tire service.

The XC40 is Volvo's smallest SUV and it has been on sale in the US since the 2019 model year. Most of the ones that come into our Gardnerville and Carson City bays are gas cars, first as the T4 and T5 with a 2.0-liter turbo four and later as the B4 and B5 mild hybrids. Volvo also built the XC40 Recharge, a fully electric version later renamed the EX40. Small and nimble, the XC40 lives a lot of short-trip life, and in the Carson Valley that means cold starts.

At a glance

  • VCC RBS0-2AE 0W-20 must be used; 0W-30 or 5W-30 to ACEA A5/B5 only if it is unavailable (Volvo XC40 oil page)
  • T5 AWD: about 5.6 L; B5 AWD: about 6.1 L with filter (Volvo support tables)
  • Oil and filter every 10,000 miles or 1 year (Volvo 2025 maintenance schedule)
  • Recharge / EX40: no engine oil, yearly brake fluid check still applies
  • Drive in, no appointment

Which XC40 do you have

Volvo's XC40 oil page says RBS0-2AE 0W-20 must be used, with 0W-30 or 5W-30 meeting ACEA A5/B5 as a fallback only if that oil is not available, and it ties the recommended service intervals to using the prescribed grade. We carry a full synthetic 0W-20 to the Volvo spec, so the fallback does not come up.

Cold starts in the Carson Valley

Minden records about 188 nights a year at or below freezing and about 75 at 20 F or colder on the NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals, the coldest of the three stations near our shops. An XC40 that runs a mile or two to the store in Gardnerville on a January morning starts cold, makes condensation in the crankcase and shuts off before the oil gets hot enough to drive it out.

Volvo's schedule does not shorten the oil interval for that, but its one-year limit keeps the car from carrying that moisture into a second winter. If your XC40 sees mostly short trips, we suggest coming in at the year mark even when the mileage is low. The miles versus months guide covers the same idea.

The yearly Volvo list

Volvo Car USA's 2025 factory maintenance schedule, which covers the XC40 mild-hybrid and plug-in models, sets service at 10,000 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first. The oil and filter are replaced and the service reminder is reset. The cabin filter comes every 20,000 miles, the engine air cleaner every 40,000, and Volvo adds that the air cleaner may need changing more often in dusty areas.

Brake fluid is every 3 years, or every year in mountainous areas. A Gardnerville XC40 that climbs Kingsbury Grade to the lake on weekends fits that line, and we check its brake fluid at each visit.

If yours is the electric Recharge

The XC40 Recharge and EX40 have no engine, no engine oil and no engine air filter. Volvo Car USA asks owners of fully electric cars to bring them in at least once every two years. They still have a cabin filter, brake fluid, wipers, washer fluid, tires and a 12-volt battery, and those are all things we handle.

Cold mornings in Minden affect an electric car's range and its 12-volt battery, so a battery check before winter is worth the stop.
