Volvo XC60 Oil Change: B5, T6 and the T8 Recharge

Volvo's current US support page for the XC60 lists a 0W-20 oil meeting VCC C6SP at about 6.1 liters, and earlier XC60s list 0W-20 to VCC RBS0-2AE, about 5.6 liters on the T5, T6 and T8. Volvo services the XC60 every 10,000 miles or once a year, whichever comes first.

The XC60 is the Volvo we see most at the Mae Anne Avenue and Longley Lane bays, and plenty of them commute I-80 between Sparks and Truckee or the I-580 corridor to Carson City every day. The second-generation XC60 arrived for 2018 with the T5, the turbocharged and supercharged T6 and the T8 plug-in hybrid. From the 2021 model year the gas versions moved to the B5 and B6 mild hybrids with a 48-volt starter-generator, and the T8 continued as the Recharge. Here is what each one takes and what Volvo asks for along with the oil.

At a glance

  • Volvo US support page: 0W-20 to VCC C6SP, about 6.1 L (current XC60)
  • B5 / B5 AWD (B420T2): about 6.1 L; T8: about 5.6 L (Volvo support tables)
  • Oil and filter every 10,000 miles or 1 year (Volvo 2025 maintenance schedule)
  • Cabin filter at least once a year, more often in dusty areas, per Volvo
  • Spark plugs every 60,000 miles on the same schedule

Spec and volume for each XC60

Volvo writes its own oil approvals, and the XC60 has carried two of them. Volvo's support tables for 2018 to roughly 2022 cars list SAE 0W-20 meeting VCC RBS0-2AE, with about 5.6 liters including the filter for the T5, T6 and T8 Twin Engine and about 6.1 liters for the B5 and B5 AWD. Volvo's current US support page for the XC60 lists 0W-20 meeting VCC C6SP at about 6.1 liters.

Which one your car needs depends on model year and engine code, and we look it up before the drain plug comes out. The XC60 has no dipstick on most versions, so we fill to Volvo's volume and confirm on the driver display. Volvo's 2025 schedule says only full synthetic oil meeting ACEA A5/B5 should be used.

Ten thousand miles or one year

Volvo Car USA's 2025 factory maintenance schedule for the XC60 and its other mild-hybrid and plug-in models calls for service every 10,000 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first, with the oil and filter replaced and the service reminder reset each time. Every 20,000 miles the cabin filter is replaced and automatic transmission fluid is checked for leaks. At 40,000 the engine air cleaner housing is cleaned and the filter replaced, and spark plugs follow at 60,000.

An XC60 on a daily Truckee commute can hit 10,000 miles in well under a year. One that stays around Old Southwest Reno may take two years to get there, and Volvo still wants it in yearly.

Smoke, dust and the XC60's cabin filter

Volvo's schedule says the cabin filter should be replaced at least once a year, or more often in heavy traffic and dirty or dusty areas. In Northern Nevada that second clause is the normal case. Reno gets about 7.35 inches of precipitation a year on NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals, and summer wildfire smoke from California and Nevada fires can settle over the Truckee Meadows for weeks.

Volvo's air cleaner line carries the same note about dusty areas. We pull both filters and show them to you. See the cabin filter and smoke season guide for what a clogged one does to airflow and the air you breathe.

The T8 Recharge and the mild hybrids

The T8 Recharge pairs the 2.0-liter engine with a rear electric motor and a plug-in battery. Its oil volume matches the other Drive-E engines at about 5.6 liters, and it stays on the same 10,000-mile or yearly schedule even if the engine rarely runs. The B5 and B6 mild hybrids use a 48-volt system to help the engine and restart it smoothly, but they change oil exactly like a conventional car.

We do the engine-side work on every version and leave the high-voltage system to the dealer. The Nevada DMV exempts hybrids, including the T8, from smog testing for their first five model years.

What we look at on an XC60

  • Oil spec matched to engine code, full synthetic 0W-20, new filter, reminder reset
  • Cabin filter and engine air filter pulled and shown
  • Brake fluid, which Volvo wants yearly in mountainous areas
  • Coolant level and condition, washer fluid, wipers and lights
  • Tire pressure and a battery test at participating locations

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

What oil does a Volvo XC60 take?

A full synthetic 0W-20 meeting Volvo's VCC spec: C6SP on current US pages, RBS0-2AE on many earlier cars. We look it up by engine code.

How much oil does an XC60 B5 hold?

About 6.1 liters including the filter, per Volvo's support tables. The T5, T6 and T8 are about 5.6 liters.

How often does Volvo want the XC60 serviced?

Every 10,000 miles or once a year, whichever comes first.

Should I change the cabin filter more often in Reno?

Volvo says at least once a year and more often in dusty areas. Smoke season usually makes that decision obvious when we pull it.
